3GS and iPad2 tethering

my dad just got an ipad 2

he currently has a 3gs on orange which is out of contract but hes paying £10 a month to them for sim only

the iphone is locked to orange

I tried to 'pair' the ipad to the 3gs via bluetooth but the iPad doesnt even see the 3gs

is this because tethering isnt enabled on the iphone ?

or should it see it but not be able to tether?

Will getting orange to 'unlock' the iphone enable tethering?

Basically what im asking is, how can i bluetooth internet tether the wifi ipad to the iPhone 3gs? moving networks is fine if thats needed

It's not Bluetooth you want but Wifi.

Go into the settings on the 3GS and enable the Personal Hotspot feature, giving a password and then enabling it.

Then on the iPad, just search for WiFi networks and the 3GS hotspot should appear and you can connect to it as any other WiFi network. The symbol at the top of the iPad display will be a linked chain icon rather than the usual WiFi one but it works just the same.

Give Orange a call as Tethering may cost a little bit more. In settings look for personal hotspot and enable if it's there.

3GS doesnt support wifi tethering

and Personal Hotspot only appears on 3GS when its connected via bluetooth to a device that it can tether

Thats the thing Orange want £20 a month to tether

We considered switching to giffgaff but were unsure wether getting orange to unlock the iPhone would enable 'personal hotspot' options
