3GS Jailbreak 4.2.1

New iPhone4s might not be jailbreakable at all for now - I've seen a few reports that Apple is now shipping phones with a patched bootrom, rendering the current batch of jailbreaks impotent.

My problem isn't the jailbreak - it's updating. Sure, I could do a standard restore in iTunes, but my baseband is unlockable so there's some merit in keeping it that way even if I don't need it to be so (there's no way I'd ever do the iPad 'hack' as it'll knacker the resale value).

Sorry to go slightly offtopic, but I have an iPhone 3GS jailbroken with limera1n on 4.1, MC133B, 05.14.02, is there anyway I can upgrade to 4.2 and jailbreak it, keeping it completely the same? - the way it's setup (winterboard, fonts, apps, etc etc)?

Yep tethered with Windows, or untethered with a mac. Baseband needs to be upgraded though but I would wait if I was you.

Looks like that's a case of "use it or lose it" - they'd normally wait for 4.3 now that it's out on beta, but they discovered Apple were ahead of them and had already fixed the exploit.

Now it's a race to see who gets there first - Apple with 4.3 or the devs with GP. We'll see.

I'm giving thought to losing my JB again (as I've done before) - how much system resources is all this JB stuff using anyway?

AT LAST.... but following the comments on a range of threads, seems that things aren't going too smoothly. Lots of people getting failures in the actual jailbreak process (apparently can be sorted with a terminal command) and some unable to install Cydia (servers getting hammered) and having to do so through redsn0w. At the monent, greepois0n is it's only available for Mac too. Early days eh!

I'm going to wait. Servers are been hammered.

I don't mean this nastily at all but if you want a smartphone with the freedom that JB'ing gives you, why didn't you all just get an Android phone?

Is it purely down to the fact that you all think JB'd iOS > Android? :)

Yup. I personally feel like iOS is a much smoother, more polished experience than Android, and the App Store is miles ahead of the Android Market.

I bought an HTC Desire HD the other week actually, because I got bored of waiting for a 4.2 JB, but sold it earlier this week because it's just not sleek enough for me. Whilst things have improved a lot (I've had an HTC Magic>Nexus One>Desire HD) they're still not there, for me.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Honeycomb and its smartphone variant launch though, because things are seriously starting to gather momentum. If they can sort out the UI a bit more, and improve the Android market, I'll be buying my fourth Android phone :)
