My wife's 3G is on it's last legs and is devastatingly slow.
I'm wondering is it worth getting a 3GS as these are relatively cheaper than iPhone 4.
But my concern is, do the 3GS have and slowdown with newer iOS firmwares ?

Yeah mate, multitasking spotlight and I've also removed all language packs excluding English, it's slow, freezes now and again too
It's on it's way out, it's 4 years old
( I am talking 3G and not gs btw )

Well, the 3GS is a more powerful machine so it should be better. Whether it's worth the cost to change only you can decide.

Well I have noticed a significant slow down with my 3GS in the 2 years I've had it and with iOS 5 around the corner I can't see it getting any better.

Upgrading will just prolong the life as the slowdowns are inevitable with older hardware.

I get along fine with iOS4 on a 3GS with spotlight disabled, no real slow downs (but then I tend to be a bit OCD with apps left in a multi-tasking state). Reports have said that iOS5 runs fine on a 3GS also. It could be worth thinking that they were just vanilla installs too, if you did your own and disabled spotlight etc you could find that it runs perfectly acceptably on a 3GS.

That said however, with the rumors thrown about that we could expect the iPhone 4S/5 at some point this year, I would recommend going for a 4. I think you'd really appreciate the performance out of the cost compared to a 3GS (i.e, for a little bit more you'd get much improved hardware and greater performance etc) plus you get the lovely hi-res screen, front facing camera etc
