Hi all,

Just like to say that after the years of nipping on and off these forums looking through topics, I finally pulled the finger out and joined the community!

I've been on a laptop for a while now - as much as it is powerful with its i7 and AMD graphics, its just not the same as a PC! I have some compensation money coming my way, so it was pretty obvious to me what to do with some of it!

My first build was in 2007, was a mid-high end gaming pc built for about £750, shortly after that I did a cheaper £450 budget build for a friend. So its safe to say its been a while, I've spent a lot of time catching up on the new technologies etc and here is what I decided on:

CPU:
Intel Core i7 3770K,1155, Ivy Bridge, Quad Core, 3.5GHz

CPU Cooling:
Arctic Cooling Freezer i30

Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H, Intel Z77

Memory:
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Jet Black LP, PC3-12800 (1600)

GPU:
2GB Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce 3X, 28nm, PCIe 3.0 (x16), 6008MHz GDDR5, GPU 980MHz, Boost 1058MHz, Cores 1344

Storage:
2TB Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200.14 SATA 3 6GB/s 7200rpm 64MB Cache

&

128GB OCZ Vertex 4, 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s

Audio:
Asus ROG Xonar Phoebus Soundcard

Case:
Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred V3

PSU:
750W OCZ OCZ750FTY-UK Fatal1ty Series, 85% Eff

Monitor:
24" Dell U2412M IPS LED Monitor

Probably wack on a Blu-Ray Reader/Writer in there as well.

Monitor is a tough issue, would like my xbox and my PC naturally on the same desk - contemplating dual-monitoring it up with a u2410 not sure LED next LCD is a good/bad idea yet - more research required!

CPU was an easy choice, not seeing the need for a six-core just yet!
GPU was tougher, think im set with the 670 -I intend overclocking, rumours are that it can push a 680 once OC'd?

Let us know your thoughts...

Not only for gaming, will be doing a lot of 3d modelling/animating, video editing, music production.

I figured with all that production/rendering going on the extra cores would come in handy.

Message received ;)

What's your budget? It seems around £1000 roughly from what you're speccing.

Obviously for all your rendering etc the i7 would be more suitable.

As for CPU cooling have a look at this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-037-AL it's very well reviewed and is a great cooler.

Gigabyte windforce 670 is arguably the best 670 out there, it's very popular here.

SSD wise check out the Samsung 830 series, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-153-SA&groupid=1657&catid=2101&subcat=2103 only £80 for 128gb in a very good drive.

For the PSU check out Corsair and XFX. A little more expensive but quieter and are generally thought of as the best brands out there, you could easily go 650W for a 670:

The U2412M is a great monitor, although it doesn't have HDMI, so that could be an issue for the 360...

Lastly, if you want faster RAM look at Samsung again: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-017-SA

Edit to add: Welcome to the forum :)

Not much more than £1500.

Yeah i've heard good things about that particular 670 everywhere i've gone, still tempted by splashing out on a 7970 though...

On the U2412M no hdmi is the real issue, the U2410 seems the obvious choice but am I paying an extra £125 just for HDMI connectivity?

If you go with doom's build you may want to go for the the PCI version of the sound card. I have a similar motherboard (the UD3H), the same cooler and a windforce 680. Due to the size of the cooler it sort of obstructs the top PCI-E x1 slot. I will post a pic if i am able, to show you.

Re 670 vs 7970, check this link out:

As you can see, the 670 wins some and the 7970 wins some, it depends on which games you play, both are very good cards.

Also the monitor specced in Doom's build has great reviews and is exceptional value for money, so I'm told, as well as having HDMI. Doom hasn't included a Blu-Ray player on there, so you'll need to add on roughly £60 to that price, but other than that it's a great build.

Looks a decent build, but im pretty set on the sound card and monitor. Would an 850W really be necessary, 750 seemed sufficient to me - or am I slightly ambitious with my W predictions?

Will you be looking at SLI in the future?

With a single card a 650w will be fine and 750w for 2 cards.

The fan clips on the cooler sort of obstruct where the sound card would go. If you bough the PCI sound card however it would stop you going SLI down the line. I'm in this position my self and not sure what best to do. (Sorry for the slight thread hijack.)
