Probably a bit late I know but after some advice, my son wants a 3rd monitor for his pc for Christmas so that’s what I bought. It just dawned on me his gpu only has 2 DVI, 1 HDMI and one Display Port (Sapphire Dual-X R9 270X) and I ordered a 3rd DVI cable.

His new monitor (Benq 21.5”) deffinately has DVI & HDMI so will I just need to get a HDMI cable instead? Can he then run his old monitors on the DVI as he does at present and the new one on HDMI to give him his 3 screen desktop?

Sorry for the question just need to know so I can order a HDMI cable if needed.

Thanks for the quick reply he currently uses the 2 dvi connections

All 3 monitorsites are identical 21.5" BenQ with DVI and hdmi

In that case, as Armageus said, you'll be fine. Just hook them up using DVI, DVI & HDMI, power on and you'll be good to do. The only thing you won't be able to do is hot-swap, all 3 screens will need to be connected at boot up for the third to be recognised.
