Evenin all,
I've gotten myself a nice new 32" 1080p TV for that commercialised holiday we all love, and I want to hook it up as my 3rd monitor to my PC. Currently, I have 2 monitors both with one DVI port and one VGA, and both are connected to my 5850 by DVI. One is 1080p, one is 1440x900.
I'm well aware that I simply cannot connect the TV via the HDMI port and have all 3 working perfectly, and none of the displays have DisplayPort, so that's out of the question.
As I see it, the options open to me are:
- Get a second discrete graphics card. More below...
- Get an Active DisplayPort to DVI adaptor. Have any further details emerged on these since I bought my 5850 (in October)?
I actually have an 8500GT lying around, which I could pop into my motherboard, which has one DVI and one VGA port. My thinking would be, since I'm primarily gaming on my 1080p monitor, and using the TV for BluRay, I could connect the smaller third monitor to the DVI port on the 8500GT. For this to work though, I need to know a few things:
- Will the ATi and nVidia cards play ball?
- Is having two discrete graphics cards with different monitors supported? I hear Windows 7 is quite good in this respect... (I'm using Professional x64)
- Will it work with Linux? I'm guessing no, but I might as well ask, someone might have a useful guide.
Cheers!
