There I am having fixed ATIs Catalyst Control Centre after the latest update managed to kill it stone dead unable to open.

Staring at the Overdrive panel I'm wondering why, when GPUs are mooching about on 50-60 degrees idle, that is considered perfectly acceptable...

...when with an idle CPU temperature like that there would be a great clamouring to "get yee a 3rd party cooler".

What is the unspoken taboo about ditching the stock cooler on the GPU in the same way as the retail cooler that comes with a CPU?

I'm slightly considering one myself but compared to the mountain of CPU coolers there's only a small handful of GPU coolers...

Replacing the CPU cooler doesn't void your warranty, whereas swapping a GPU's might.

Replaced the stock cooler on my 4870x2 because of the insanity inducing noise level as well as the toasty temps.
Being 2nd hand it was out of warranty anyway, so wasn't (overly) fussed about messing with it (that's not to say I wouldn't have superraged if I had bricked it ).
