one of my friends at school was 17 in sept and passed in Dec.
He bought a 1.6 2002 ford focus for 7.5k
He put a decent sound system in it and that is all, 3 weeks ago he wrote it off, his parents were paying the insurance and it was 3rd party only, the car was sold to a scrapyard for £500
so he is out of pocket by around 7 grand.

Has anyone else done anything similar, would you insure a car worth 7.5k 3rd party??
TBH I cannot believe they insured it 3rd party only, the cheapskates.

im amazed that they were allowed to have TP only on a car valued at so much.

idiot insurers, idiot parents :]

extremely stupid, the price difference between TP and fully comp really isnt that much most of the time.

Tom.

Tom.

On my Focus i seem to remember it was around £250, so not too much compared to £7.5k. :p

Why are the insurers idiots though?
They made their money, he crashed into a wall which wrote the car off, the wall owners got money from the insurance company and is it true that he cant now cancel the policy?

I wrote off a Zx6r on 3rd party. Was probably worth about 3.5k at the time and I sold the remains for very little. It was actuallly rebuilt by a forum member on here but I think he didn't make any profit on it at the end of the day.
At the time I wasn't too bothered as a claim would probably have meant a similar bike would become uninsurable but looking back on it now I wish I'd still had it fully comp as I did in the first two years of owning it.

I did have a lots of folks offer to remove it from my drive though so I could claim for theft, but I'm just too honest for that sort of thing :(

i thought most insurance companies wouldnt insure 3rd parth on cars if valued more than £4k so something wrong there

Yeah, when I changed my insurance last week the woman said that I had to change to FC as the car is over £5k. Maybe he told some porky pies to try and get a cheaper premium?

Cost New ('02) £ 11745
Franchised Dealer £ 5220
Independent Dealer £ 4915
Private Good £ 4565
Private Poor £ 3785
Part Exchange £ 4265

He paid 6.5 grand, or so he claims the car is worth a shade under 5k
