right... just loaded up drakes fortune for the first time... just completed the first section (i've escaped from the boat and have now flown to an island etc...)

anyway... its been a good while since i've played a 3rd person game, and i'm having some real issues getting my head around the camera angles and the like... in the past i've played many tomb raider games and the like, including things like ratchet & clank and jak & daxter and don't recall ever finding it this tricky...

my problem is, when just wandering around i seem to be more comfortable with the horizontal camera axis being flipped, but as soon as fighting starts (not sure why its different in my head) i end up turning the wrong way! - when i go into the aiming mode i'm perfectly fine with my regular horizontal and flipped vertical cuz thats how i've just played COD4...

Ive been flicking back and forth between flipped and standard on the horizontal camera and they both feel right and wrong depending on whats going on...

driving me a bit loopy, anyone else found this?

I found drakes fortune to be quite good with camera angles compared to say devil may cry 4
nono, not saying its bad, i'm just saying i can't get me head around it...

maybe the amount of hours playing COD has messed up my head in terms of the control system... (another example is i keep pressing R2 to shoot cuz thats how i had it on COD)...

If you have your y-axis inverted then its best to have both the aim and camera inverted as well, may take a little use to the camera but its sweet after a while. (if thats what you meant)

Sounds mad, I just treat games like that, as first person shooters without a crosshair.

Scort.

I think I know what you're getting at - though I am considered a bit loopy by at least several notable scholars...

I have this kind of problem with some games, where your mind has to switch from a kind of first-person approach (ie, aiming as though an FPS even though the character is depicted in third person), to the actual third person approach, where your mind has to adjust to the fact that you're turning a camera set behind and pivoting on the character (ie, to look to the right, you have to swing the right thumbstick to the left).

Sometimes I turn the wrong way without thinking, and end up just going all the way round instead of correcting myself - sometimes quicker in the long run. Maybe this problem exacerbated with age, like the dreaded 'FPS Extended Session Nausea', which was never a problem 'When I were a lad'...

I suppose one should prioritise the settings to be comfortable for the fighting, as this is where mistakes are likely to affect your game progress.

I can't get my head round FPS with pads, wish I could , but I just think FPS you really can't beat mouse and keyboard. Really wish I could get used to the pads but I have tried so many times. I might give one last go when condemned 2 comes out though

nail on the head mate! you've summed up why my head ain't just switching for me, its the idea of swinging the camera around that says to me that it should be flipped on the x axis...

(nanoman: both my camera and 1st person is inverted, god it'd be weird if they were opposite :p)

gonna give them both another few goes tomorrow and stick with one and let my mind get used to ut :)

nail on the head mate!

Cool! Us loopy guys gotta stick together! :)

Here's a tip for ya: You might find it a bit easier to get the hang of if, in addition to the x-axis turn, you adjust the angle of elevation so the character's head is roughly central to the screen - therefore his POV is close to your POV. See if that helps. If symptoms persist, consult me in the morning...

Actually, we're not loopy (well, not me anyway... I see, for example, you haven't quite got the hang of Caps Lock from the look of your username :) ) It's just simple hand-eye coordination. The camera is locked in on the character, whereas the player wants to view the environment.

Is it really too much to ask game developers for a camera that looks at what we, the players, want to look at? Upon releasing the thumbstick, the view can zip back to centre rear of the character. Simple.

Darnit... I coulda got into the games industry instead of wasting my talent on a desk job... mutter mutter... mild cursing.... incoherent mumbling...

my g/f finished drakes fortune last night!
but she did struggle with the fact that one of the sticks is used to look around!!!
who said women are best at multitasking!!!

I had a horrible time playing Drake's Fortune with the pad but the more I played the more I got used to it, I do have both axis inverted though which is annoying as I play demo's that can't invert the axis as it is unplayable.

I found it rather annoying as well. I dont really get into games like this but i thought it worth a go because of its great reception. I dont like this platform jumping stuff. But i'm glad i tried it

I was fine with the default settings for U:DF, but FPSs on the otherhand I can't get over their controls at all. Too much mouse and keyboard for me to change I think.

I can't even play this due to the lack of controller set up options and me being left handed. Is it really too much to ask that we have more flexibilty in setting up controls? It can't be hard.

Same here I thikn 10 years of FPS on mouse keyboard is too much for my old brain to take in :p

just so you all know i've been playing most of the evening and something has clicked and its not really an issue any more...

strange the way the brain works... it just needed training :)

I had the same, I sucked when I started playing but after a few hours it was better and after a longer while I even managed to finish the game on hard.

The hardest part for me to grasp was the shooting.

Seriously, you think you've lined up a headshot and it either goes over, or to the side.

You get used to it, but I felt it could have been better (the accuracy), and the guns could have done more damage.

Other than that it's definitely a great game :)
