4.1 splitter cable

Hi folks,
Currently running a very old 4.1 set up (speakers came with my first pc purchase).
I find that most games do not utilise all speakers and tend to just output in stereo.
I'd like to continue using all speakers, but maybe just in a 2.1 set up? Would I just need a splitter cable for the black and green cables to essentially change them into one output? Or am I missing something with 4.1?
Thanks

4.1 isn't really some standard, so sub's signal might be just grabbed from front and rear signals.
Green and black plugs hints to it doing that because those are colour codes for front and rear channels:

As for games outputting only stereo unless you have more than two channels configured in Windows sound playback settings you'll never get more channels out from PC.
I think you should be able to select 5.1 and then simply uncheck center and Subwoofer.
