hi all

as the title says ive had 4 bust motherboards in a row in around 2 months
ive had 2 DOA asrock dual 939 boards
1 DFI ultra D with catchy fan and 1 DFI with nailed sound ports.

Got my 5th motherboard today (an asus an8-sli SE), even though it has far less features than the DFI at least this works (although this has SLI).

How unlicky am I having 4 sh***d boards in a row. the guy in the shop said if this one breaks he will chase me with a stick :p

anyone else as unlucky as me???

I know a man who is, my mate brings his pc over every saturday, four of us play coop, he plugs pc in all fans run ( without go button being pressed!) but no boot, no diddly squat. after much checking, swaping bits etc, we decide MB is dead. Asus board, no problem 3 year warranty. stuggle to find a replacement board for a socket A chip, settle for asrock. rebuilds pc with new board, plugs in pc 1st time all fans run, no boot, no diddly squat. (In the mean time all other bits including power supply have been checked and work fine ) Returns MB. when replacement arrives, rebuilds pc with new board, plugs in pc 1st time fans run, no boot, no diddly squat AGGGHHH!!! Returns MB, when replacement arrives unpacks MB attaches all power connectors but no bits, plugs in and____ nothing happens (this is a good sign! PHEW ) so sets up board sorts cpu jumper, fits cpu and memory and just to be sure before stuffing all in case he turns on the main to the power supply YES you've guessed it all fans run, no boot, no nothing. At this point going to live on desert island with no computers was seriously considered.
Turns out it was a faulty batch of MB's and thay all go furbar when you change the fsb to 333 HA, HA, HA. Poor fellow decided " what the hell lets upgrade the d**n thing, orders new socket MB and cpu, brings it over to my place, we build it together. Plug it in turn on the power and OH yes, all fans run, no boot, no nothing . to cut a long story short. we discovered that the power supply had a fault, which combined with the fact that the power lead he uses at my place reverses the polarity of the supply, ment that his PS was zapping some silly quantity of volts through the mainboards. oh yes it also caused the keyboards that were attached to die also!! but all the other bits were fine.
So morale of this tale, well just 'cos the same things keep going wrong, its not always for the same reason

i would suggest getting your psu checked. or just replace it to be safe.

many times "strange" problems turn out to be the psu.

I still follow the addage that you can estimate the quality of a psu by its weight.

the heavier the better (more internal components)

I have seen 400w heavy psu's last much longer than 550 light ones. with the same amount of devices attached

Not generally true. Feel a Seasonic 600W and then feel a Tagan 580. You will find the Seasonic weighs nothing compared to the tagan and Seasonics are one of the best PSU's.

Sorry in the long story I forgot to say that the power supply did in fact go pop, we took the top off it and pluged it in with a power lead that was the correct polarity, plugged it in and pop, fizz. EX psu :p :p . I'm not sure what component would get so het up about the polarity changing but that's obviously what what going on. The thing had been coping for over a year but decided it had had enough :(
So how many of you guys have checked that your power leads don't change the polarity for you?? Of the 12 power leads currently in use in my house, (Pc. monitor, printer etc) 5 of them had been wired wrongly in the factory!! Here in france whilst there is a general code (positive on the right) we do have two pin plugs which obviously you can stick in the socket either way) so things are quite relaxed but it seems a bit mad that three pin plugs can be wired either way round out of the box!!
