Five men [aged from 15 to 26] have been arrested over a spate of recent web attacks carried out in support of Wikileaks.
...
The men were arrested in relation to "recent and ongoing" attacks by an online group that calls itself "Anonymous". Targets included the websites of PayPal, Mastercard and Amazon.
...
Anonymous used a technique called "distributed denial of service" (DDoS) attacks in a bid to take the sites offline.
...
The group used an online tool called LOIC to allow members to easily take part in the bombardments of websites. The site from which it could be downloaded reassured people that there was "next to zero" chance that anyone who used it would be caught. But a study found that the tool makes no attempt to hide a user's net address which would lead any investigator almost straight to an attacker.
...
Thousands of people are thought to have downloaded versions of the tool. (BBC online)
"Next to zero", Yeah, right

How could so many muppets have been so stupid as to use a hacking tool that made "no attempt to hide a user's net address"

A study lol?

Why not write "the tool makes no attempt to hide......"

In similar news a recent study found that shooting yourself in the head is dangerous

Wkipedia said:
LOIC is an open source network stress testing application, written in C#. LOIC was initially developed by Praetox Technologies, but later it was released into the public domain.

LOIC is an acronym for Low Orbit Ion Cannon, a fictional weapon in the Command & Conquer series of video games.
Ha, ha, ha - class, absolute class :D

The idea would be that so many people would be attacking a target, that individuals within a 'swarm' wouldnt' be logged/identified. I would imagine these guys must have been either the first to attack or the last to stop attacking a certain target, thus singling them out.

That's what happens when you aren't behind 7 proxies!

unless one of the proxys in the chain is not logging details of connections it can still be traced back - jsut takes longer...

if on a PC you must assume anything you do can be traced back to your machine... the only way to be sure of anon would be

1) a clean build machine
2) a pre-pay dongle (but even then I dont know if the mac can be linked to a serial number and back to the store it was shipped to, then via cctv to you...)
3) connected to a random wireless network (assuming there is no CCTV any where near), but even then i'm paranoid and I would make sure my smart phone was turned off
4) possibly by planting software on a remote machine, but you would still need to takes steps 1,2,3 when doing that process...

removes any and all liability from the paper i imagine to say "X says Y about Z" rather than stating it as fact.

My 7 proxies comment is a meme.

/sighs

hahahhahahahahha I was reading their replies and thinking "hang on, they are not actually discussing this?!?!?"

As for the original post, all I can say for the 4chan forever-alone brigage is, hahahahhahahhaahahahhahah..serves those lemmings right.

Any big website that was attacked by them would want to make an example out of it, that's why they picked a few and prosecuted them I guess.

They should all stick into bullying little girls or trolling scientology chatlines..

Also targeting a few and saying the program makes no attempt to hide the identity and it will be easy to find others (even if it's false) will make most stop.
