Hi,

Thinking of getting a new Laptop but I want a powerful CPU because I am using some software that's multithreaded and I don't reckon my Core i3 will last very long if I keep on using it. I can hear the fan running at high speed when I am running the software.

But don't know which version of the i7 I should go with.

This: Intel Core i7 4700MQ - 2.4 GHz
Or this: Intel Core i7-4500U

You can compare the two here; http://ark.intel.com/compare/75460,75117

As you can see, the 4700MQ offers more cores and more threads, which will be great for applications that take advantage of that. It's also clocked higher, with a greater boost as well as more cache. It can support more memory. Superior onboard graphics. PCI 3 over PCI2 with more lanes, and yada yada yada.

It boils down to whether or not you think what you are doing with the laptop justifies the cost of either chip.

I compile a lot of linux and unix software from source so for me, more cores and higher clock speeds equate to lower compilation times which I will gladly pay the extra for. However, if the two laptops were identical, separated only by their chip, I would be hard pressed to pay several hundred pounds more for something that might only take a couple of minutes longer to compile. It's cheaper for me to go and make a cup of tea while I wait.

The 4700MQ Laptop is cheaper, a Lenovo, so I think I'll go with that. Thanks.
