4 cores to 2? am i missing something

so i'm happily chugging along, not over clocked the i7 yet as I'm still trying to get the system stable, the 4870 X2 just isn't getting on with 64bit vista, many memory dumps etc blamed by windows on the ATI drivers...

anyways onto my point, i've just noticed that bios is now only reading 2 cores from the CPU when before it was happily reading 4, what could I off done to **** it off enough to lose 2 cores? Device manager seems to read 8 threads, but CPUz only reads 4

The i7 has HT so it only has four physical cores, however it uses HT to kind of emulate another 4. So CPUZ would only read 4 where as Device Manager would only read 8. No idea about you Bios issue, but for the X2 have you tried updating your drivers and removing the old ones using drivercleaner?

Could try this:
Click start, type in 'run' and hit enter. When the Run console comes up enter 'msconfig'. When the 'System Configuration' window opens click on the 'Boot' tab and select 'Advanced options'. Make sure the 'number of processors' is unticked. Click OK, apply, OK and if prompted, restart and see if all 4 cores/ 8 threads are showing.

What board you got mate? In my P6T's bios, there is an "active processor cores" option in the AI Tweaker Menu, as well as a seperate HT option.

toxicredcat your a legend, i changed it from 4 cores to unticked like you said and i have all 4 cores back in CPUz, cheers dude

Glad you got it fixed Did you change that setting or did it somehow change itself (not being funny). It's happened to others as well but for ram, suddenly it's enabled and you've lost a chunk of ram.

i changed it, did it fine on the laptop, didn't like it on the desktop =/

Hmmm, yeah, that setting is designed to help system manufacturers to test faulty cores, so best just to leave it as default.
