noob to internet.
2 days ago I was getting 4 DOS attacks per second as reported on my dg383gt, is this bad ?, then my internet went down for 48hrs after being subjected to these attacks reporting "CHAD authentication failed" even though my login details were fine.

I re-flashed/reset router, re-ghosted XP and after 6hrs my internet came back.

What is going on ?, do I need to be concerned about DOS attacks ?, did these attacks kill my internet ?, am I paranoid

thanks

DOS attacks are usually performed against websites (it stands for Denial of service) i think its pretty much just when several PCs send hundreds of pings per second in the hope it will crash a server or in your case your router. Not something that usually affects home users. A reboot should sort it normally as with most connection you will get a new IP

4 DoS attacks per second eh? It ain't measured like that - ignore the software, it's talking rubbish :)

It probably meant 4 dodgy-looking packets per second - and four packets aren't gonna harm anyone.

CHAP authentication failed perhaps? Usually means one of BT's radius servers has gone **** up or an ISP is being flaky.

Yes, you're being a bit paranoid.

Hey guys,

I've got the DG834G and I've just have a look at my log and since yesterday I've had loads of DoS attacks too

Is someone out to get Netgear user or something :)

Stop looking at your log files. It's the internet and stuff happens.
Failing that, turn the PC off. Job done.

I think that current society has created a diseased paranoia amongst the wary noobs out there, leading to an over reactive prejudice towards technical flim flam, over zealous software and the unknown.

Ps. with a dg834gt firewall router, do I need to enable Windows firewall ?.

There is no point using the Windows firewall - the router already blocks incoming connections.

It may be a good idea to have a different software firewall though so that you have control over which programs have internet access. That will allow you to stop any nasties that get onto your system from 'calling home.'
