given the low cost of 23 and 24 panels, I am thinking of a 2x2 or 3x2 setup as an alternative to a 30 inch monitor.

budget around 1k

can it be done and what would I need in terms of card, stand, software and panels ?

single slot slot preferred
will be used for for video not gaming

Yeah you can easy do it for that price, but it depends how good you want the monitors to be.

4 monitors could easy cost you a total of £500/600 and the GPU will cost £220. (Thinking AMD) Mounts could cost you from £40 to £200.

Check eBay for monitor mounts, we brought two for £20 each.

You're not allowed to call that big auctioning site by its name according to the rules, but yes that's the place to check for affordable mounts.

So it is basically as easy as :-

1. Buy a video card with the required number of ports.
2. Buy n monitors with thin bezels
3. Buy 1 quad (or two triple) monitor mounts.

No special software needed ? But if I set VLC to go full screen in my current dual setup then it just fills one monitor.....

eyefinity allows for one big resolution so i cant see why you wouldnt be able to see VLC across the whole screen. of course bezels get in the way and unless its for productivity or cctv monitoring i wouldn't bother with a 2x2 layout.
