I'd like to connect 3 24" monitors and my 42" tv to my 6990 but I can't seem to do it. I'm assuming it's to do with the adapters. 3 in any comination is fine, but when I add a fourth my tv goes crazy and windows spams the "hardware detected" followed by "hardware removed" noise over and over until the tv turns off.

I have:

Monitor 1: Direct DVI input
Monitor 2: DisplayPort -> Passive DVI
Monitor 3: DisplayPort -> Active DVI
Television: DisplayPort -> HDMI

The tv cable is actually HDMI on one end and DVI on the other, so I'm using a DVI->HDMI adapter to plug it into the DisplayPort->HDMI adapter.

How can I get all 4 working at the same time? My roommate also has a 6990 and 3 monitors and is using the same connections as my monitors listed above(excluding tv). Is there any way I could use one of his adapters to make mine work and he uses his HDMI adapter or something?

Can you try connecting them all via DP?
What is the exact config of your roommate's 6990? just try EXACTLY the same as him

I have my monitors the same as him. The problem is adding a tv to the mix so I have 4 connections instead of 3. The card is unhappy with anything over 3 so I'm thinking it's to do with this whole active/passive thing.

I think the 6990 comes with only a single active adaptor. You'll need an additional active adaptor to run the 4th monitor.

PS: your roommate needs his active adaptor to run three monitors so you'll have to buy an extra one yourself. And wow 7 displays and two 6990 builds, ...your room must be 40 degrees in summer with a humongous electricity bill :p.

My bad, meant to say housemate not roommate :P He's in the room next door. I figured it would be to do with the active adapers. I'll order me a new one then. Thanks :)
