4 or 8 pin?

I'm a little confused.
I have a new HX650 sat ready to be used, but I'm not sure how many plugs to put in. The mobo has an 8pin socket, where I am only used to boards with a 4 pin socket. The PSU has 2 4pin plugs which can be doubled to an 8 pin. Should I use the full 8pins? Or should I only use one of the 4 pin plugs? I know I'm being silly, but I dont wanna blow anything up!

I need someone to tell me how many to plug in, preferably with a simple explanation as to why.

...because there is an 8 way connector, you might as well fill it. It also allows lower loading across the 8 wires.
