5850 to gtx 650 ti boost both cost about the same price, 3d mark went from 3355 to 4685. Is this about right .?

The GTX650Ti should never have been considered a decent buy over the 5850.

5850's were 200 quid RRP, a proper upgrade would be a 7950/660Ti

Yeah, if I was upgrading from a 5850, the very least I'd aim for would be a 7850 / 660, but ideally a 7950 or cheap 660 ti (if such a thing exists :D).

Well the modern equivalent to the HD 5850 in the current AMD lineup is the HD 7950, despite price differences. AMD slightly modified the Radeon HD nomenclature in the HD 6000 series, so it goes 5850 > 6950 > 7950. You'd have seen a much more impressive gain if you'd gotten the 7950 (or the equivalent Nvidia which is a GTX 670), though I can't blame you for having bought a similarly priced card expecting a bigger upgrade. Was the 5850 really around £120?

As already said, that's not really a big leap. 7950 or 660Ti would have been the suggested upgrade.

Regardless of which though, what's the rest of your system like? CPU can play a big part in 3DMark.

Is it fair to say that the low end cards (650, 640, etc) aren't really improving that much year-on-year? The high-end are getting the most love, the mid-range a little, but the low-end stuff really isn't improving in performance hardly at all.

Well there was the EOL deal on the Sapphire Xtreme 5850 when it sold for £120 or so but that was around 2 years ago I believe not 4 years ago. At release (4 years ago) the 5850 was £220-230 as others have said so a fairer comparison would be a card that's currently in that range. It's a bit like buying a much lower spec car 4 years later and complaining it's not as good as the car you just sold...

The 650ti boost is not too far from the 660 and as I only have a q6600 rig it was not worth getting anything better.

5850 to gtx 650 ti
i would say its downgrade :P from good card to cheap as chips one :P
Get some good second hand card if you are on budget...
