no probs in the winter my rig would idle at 28 ish now it's idling at 40 along with my 5850 which is idling at 41. Ambient temp in room at the minute is 27 degrees :eek.

No a prob using the air con to cool the room doen but thats like 1500watts an hour just to browse and play some game. Saying that tho cpu is only hitting 57-58 under prime 95

Is this safe or should i clock back a bit to try reduce the idle temps?

Yep, perfectly safe, my i7 idles at 37-41c, hits about 68c in gaming and 72c on highest core with p95, i7's are toasty runners anyway, also this summer heat has upped temps for me by 4-5c.

This humidity we have ain't helping things tbh. I'll give the case a good dust out 2morrow see if that can bring them down a degree or two. I was thinking i'm sure people or live in hotter climates have stupidly high idle temps compared to us.

about 35ºC here these last few days (no airconditioning yet but I better hurry up b4 the walls melt down lol). my 1090T idles at 40º. can't complain
