i really can't spend any more than this because any extra will come out of my food money for the week. :p

i'm looking at either the antec vpf450 or corsair cx430m. i can just about afford the extra 1 pound they are over budget.

antec: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-235-AN
corsair: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-115-CS

for now it'll be powering a haswell pentium system with onboard graphics but i'll probably get something like a used 7850 for some light gaming in a month or 2. should i just toss a coin?

Both are pretty poor units. The Antec is a Delta built unit with a pair of 18A 12v rails giving 360w. The Corsair is a CWT built unit with a single 32A 12v rail giving a total of 384w. I suppose if I had a gun to my head and was forced to choose from the pair I would hestatingly go for the Corsair due to the slightly stronger single 12v rail and it's semi modular. Normally I wouldn't consider either even for a budget system.

The Superflower Golden Green HX350w would be more than enough to run that setup and it's a far better unit than the two above. It has a single 29A 12v rail giving 348w and is built with quality internals unlike the other two.

Just to give you a idea of power consumption, the pc in my siggy pulls a max of 422w at the wall while gaming and even then only in Anno 2070. Most games are around the 220-260w range.
