Hello Guys,

I am looking for help choosing the right parts/best price for building a new machine. As the topic suggests I will be playing only WOW Legion.

Can you suggest a build with the price of max 500£ ? I can build it myself so do you think second hand parts is a good idea considering the budget ? Any links to retailers, parts, builds suggestions etc will be greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks,
Dawn

for that game you would be still ideal with the pentium G4600 which offers same performance for less, but they out of stock, however given the spec for the WOW version you want to play, it would run on an old 775 every day system of its era, so this build exceeds that by a great margin.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £499.22
(includes shipping: £12.30)

the graphics card i chose likely wouldnt do 1440p or not well, im not sure as ive never had such a monitor, is it something you own or plan to buy? for the game and the graphics card you should just look for a 22"-27" 1080p screen, i dont see you needing more than that.

I am planning to buy one, since I will be spending quite some time playing and there are lots of things going on while Raiding - I thought that a 1440p monitor will be much better, not sure about it tho.

i havent played wow since few days before Panda was released, but last time played was on a 15.6" 1366x768(or there abouts) laptop and that laptop had a dual core i5 with hd 5470 512mb(hypermemory up to 2.2gb) and ran that game perfect on high settings, had no issues with raids and what not, okay thats a smaller screen and a laptop, but the computer i spec you is miles better than that laptop i had, so you wouldnt need more than 1080p.

if anything, trying to get a screen that gpu cant handle will make things worse, but the screen isnt the main factor, its your hardware and like ive implied, that system will run the game easy, dont put yourself out for the sake of an old game.

I really liked this one so far -https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-2...e-widescreen-led-monitor-black-mo-140-lg.html

can you see any issues with GPU running with this monitor?

WOW Legion requires better hardware than all other versions of WOW.

Also, always go for the official recommended specs at minimum and whenever possible exceed them, not the minimum requirements, some of which are for 720p if you read the small print and read between the lines*, not 1080p. Game makers want everyone to buy the game so they set the bar very low for system requirements.

* and a display device capable of at least 1024x768 resolution.

With a GTX 1050Ti you're looking at graphics settings 4 or 5 out of 10 @ 1080p if you want to prevent constant dips into the 40s when things get busy in Legion. With a GTX 1050, 2 or 3 out of 10. The recommended CPU is quad core i5-3XXX or better, not a dual core i3. The i3-7100 will do better in some areas with its higher clock and better architecture but will struggle in others due to lack of cores.

Since OP doesn't mind second-hand, this would be a good avenue to get better performance. Ideally wait for the budget Coffee Lake motherboards to arrive, pair one with a four core i3-8100, and then find a good deal (£100-ish) for a used GTX 970/R9 290 or similar.

However, if December/January is too long to wait, I'd go for Ryzen CPU and a B350 board. Ryzen 1600 can be found today for £136. MSI B350M Pro-VDH for £66. TeamGroup Dark Pro 3200MHz 8GB for £90.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Since it's an exclusive WOW Legion PC, you can store it along with Windows and some other programs on a 120GB SSD for £50, even, for more snappiness.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Corsair CX 550 (grey label) for £48 (550W in case you land a R9 290 that pulls more power than GTX 970 which would be fine with the 450W version).

That's £390. Find a cheap case and the remainder of the £110 can go on a second-hand GPU.

I would imagine you mean a Ryzen 5 1400 for £140 as that is the closest to your £136 price. a 1600 would run close to £180

  • OS: Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8/Windows 10 with latest service pack
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 or AMD Phenom II X3 720
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 440 or AMD Radeon HD 5670 or Intel HD Graphics 5000
  • RAM: 2 GB
And the recommended rig:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit with latest service pack
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3330, AMD FX-6300, or better
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti or AMD Radeon R7 260X or better
RAM: 4 GB

lifted this , so 8th gen i3 will be plenty for this rig due to them now being 4 cores and a lot faster then 3rd gen i3 were, even 7th gen will be good but would personal stretch to getting latest - as with core, Ryzen 1200/1400 would be a good performer

No. 1600s were available yesterday for £136.

Thank you for the detailed responses guys! @Danny75 's suggestions are the ones I am looking for tbh. One little question - you've mentioned waiting until Jan/Feb - I am not in a rush so I can do that - not very clear to me which part is worth waiting for again? Is it for the budget coffee lake, if so is it released yet or just out of stock - if you of stock can you provide me with a link to the part? Many thanks!

It's the H310, H370 and B360 non-overclocking motherboards. Cheaper than Z370 boards which are the only ones currently available for Intel Coffee Lake processors, and more suitable for the budget. https://www.pcper.com/news/Motherbo...-Intel-Launching-New-300-Series-Chipsets-2018
