So a buddy of mine has £400 for a 24" monitor, GPU and PSU.

He's thinking a 750w Cooler Master Modular PSU, 960, and a AOC 12473PWM IPS . I don't know his system specs or anything this is all he's told me.

I'm thinking, maybe a 280 or 280x.
YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Vapor-X OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Card (11221-12-20G) £199.99
1 x Asus VN247H 24"Widescreen Super Narrow Bezel LED Monitor - Black £155.99
Total : £369.48 (includes shipping : £11.25).

But this doesn't leave much room for a PSU?

Thanks, he's heart set on nVidia, damn. Ah well.. Better PSU and monitor and still under budget.

I didn't realise they were doing this!
YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - Red £199.99
Total : £209.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The 4gb 960 is kinda pointless tho as it doesnt have to bandwidth to utilize the 4gb properly lol.The 960 in general is just not a great buy at all sadly.

Can you convince him to raise his budget a little to a 970 if hes dead-set on a nvidia card?
Does his current PSU absolutely need replaced? What unit is it?

Oh believe me i have tried. £400 is all hes got. Yeah he does, the one he's currently got is ancient and an scary no named one!

hmm

Titan X is due to launch extremely soon(maybe tomoz),Im sure a a lot of peoples 970's may end up auction sites when it does, and about £200 is a reasonable price for used 970

Hi savagesam117, i know it's slightly older tech but what about the GTX 760's or GTX 770's?

Overclockers still have some of the GTX 760's.

If his budget can't stretch to a GTX 970 that is.

You might be able to find a GTX 780 second hand for that sort of money. Maybe.

Does he really, really need a brand new PSU? Can you find out what he's got right now? If he really does, does he actually need a 650W?

The cheapest GTX 970, with a 1ms 24" AOC monitor and an Antec Truepower classic 550W is £430 + shipping.

Can he stretch the extra £40?

It does get him a GTX 970.

He really does, he told me it's really old and bad stock one.

Ooo.. You're good! I'll let him know. I think he may be able too. Thanks!

Anytime Sam :)

I hesitate to suggest this.........cause i am loyal but have a very good look around, you can still get the odd 4GB GTX 770 new, likewise can still find plenty of new 2GB ones.

Nvidia really screwed up the GTX 960, if it had had a 256-bit bus and 3Gb of ram it would be perfect for most who insist on Team green.

Yeah i don't think i'll bother with looking for the older ones, i know there are 760's on here but like you said for £40 more you could have a 970 with it's lovely stutter :P

Indeed, they had the opportunity to make something for that mid range market but just screwed themselves over.

Yeah they did, i wonder why they didn't try to sew it all up?

Think both camps have their eye on the opposition too much and not enough on the end user. Or maybe they are having too many meetings :P

Definitely, they should stop worrying about each other and just keep releasing kick ass cards with the latest and greatest tech.

You need at least 3gb of vram I believe.

The 970 effectively has 3.5gb of useful vram. thats why I bought the 280x. Value for money.

You don't need a minimum of anything, my old 2GB 7850 is still doing well!

But the 970 is a bloody good card at 1080p, better than the 280x i'd say.
