A friend is looking for a general purpose laptop. Aside from the usual web-browsing type stuff, he's looking to play some older games on it. Source engine games (left 4 dead mainly), and a few driving games. He can spend up to £400...

I saw that someone recommended the HP ProBook 4320s at £399 (plus £100 30-day rebate), and it looks like a solid laptop. But the mobility 5470 seems like quite a weak GPU, having only 80 stream processors (compared to ~1500 in high-end desktop GPUs).

Is there anything around in this price bracket that will beat the 5470, or is that as good as it's likely to get?

Cheers :)

The 5470/6470 in this machine is as good as you get for the 13" size as most are moving to the HD3000 graphics now. But if you want 15" at the moment you can find the Dell Inspiron 15r with the ati 5650 in and i3 380m(roughly around the Nvidia GT525m performance). These come in under £400 depending where you look and are probably the better gaming option if you can live with the plasticy inspiron build quality and glossy coloured lids.

Hi mrk - I was just looking at the Inspiron 15R :) Found a couple of places selling them for £339.

I admit they do look a bit vile, but the screen is bigger and the 5650 seems to have 2-3 times the horsepower of the 5470, so might be the better bet. Cheers!

Yep,

for me, though I would be totally embarrassed whipping one of those 15Rs out on the train, work, round a mates. Still some people have no shame;):D:p
