Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade the main components of my pc shortly and have a budget of around £400. The computer will not be overclocked, so I do want to be paying more, e.g. on a MB with the ability to overclock, where there is cheaper one that lacks the ability to overclock, but performs the same at stock and is just as reliable, etc.

I would be greatful for any suggestions.

Cheers.

I would however recommend to up your budget slightly just so you can get 2GB.

2GB is gonna cost £435 but well worth it imo.

However if you dont want to you have £20 left to buy on extras such as silencing your machine etc.

how about a conroe spec ;)

Get that with G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400PHU2-2GBNR) (MY-014-GS). Comes to about £461 incl. VAT

EDIT: Case & PSU better be up-to-it (i.e. good)?

May as well stick with the AM2 socket, AMD is cheaper, and you won't be tempted to overclock, conroe has great temptation of being overclocked.

You can now upgrade the CPU and the memory due to your new budget.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.40GHz (Socket AM2) - £141.95

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC5400 Dual Channel Gold GX XTC Series - £129.95

Doesn't the 6300 conroe outperform the X2 4600, as well as being of equivalent price, with lower power requirements and heat production?

Not going conroe because it would be tempting to o/c is possibly the strangest reason I have ever heard

To be honest its up to him, in my eyes they are both the same. Except Conroe, FROM WHA TI HEARD from this forum is there to be overclocked where as the AMD chips are already clocked as far as they can go.

My question still remains

Why choose a chip that is already at maximum capability (AMD) which is outperformed by a chip at stock and also has room for increased performance, runs cooler and draws less power (intel)?

Because i will always stick by my quote "AMD is better for gaming" Dunno what this conroe is like for gaming havent tried it out yet. Plus AMD sounds cooler :P
