A friends looking into a new PC and saves buying one off the shelf I said I'd ask you guys what you'd choose for £400.

He doesn't play games, it's mostly an internet machine.

Wants a TFT monitor (17-19" is fine)
and then anything goes up to budget. Doesn't need dogs b*ll*x case or anything like that, just good reliable kit which is nippy enough.

Much appreciated, ta guys :D

I'm in a similar situation, and currently have this planned for my upgrade;

Add around £120-£150 for a 19" tft, and that should be a fairly reasonable machine I think (I'm sticking with XP and have just got new keyboard, mouse and an acer p193w at christmas).

Cheers guys :) That Asus monitor looks nice! Nice little machine there too slowrunner, i'll have a nosey around on OcUK's site, I just don't know whats what these days lol.

Thanks, I've just gone for the cheapest 800Mhz memory through not understanding the differences in all the various sticks available, and the graphics is just a basic card as I don't play any games myself, and can't justify spending over £100 for a card that I'll never stress more than about 50%.

The processor and motherboard are based on the numerous good reports on this very forum, and being a P35 based board, allows good room for overclocking or a future upgrade to a quad-core Q6600. As it is, that system has the potential to overclock to 2x3Ghz from the standard 2x1.6 I believe.
