In need of a £400 spec computer for obvious everyday tasks, plus light video and photo editing, but no gaming.

Needs to be able to last 4-5 yrs and still able to handle the essential tasks then

Look forward to some specs...
Cheers

I have a similar question.
Also, if the budget increased to 500 or to 600 what would I get, what would be the advantages?

600 you might be looking at an i5. Better processor, will go everything you want it to do faster. But if i'm brutally honest i don't think it's worth it in a non gaming rig.

You could go quad core for that price:

Granted the motherboard isn't as good but it'll do :p

Seems good to me. If the purpose of the rig is for video/photo editing i'd definitely try and go for a quad no matter what for longevity. The more cores the better for this sort of usage, for gaming however its debatable and dependant on what game.

^^^^ Thats interesting because my main purpose would be photo editing and playing video.

Would a £600 i5 set up help for this kind of stuff?

The 720 is a great little chip. With that motherboard it's possible you can unlock it to a quad as well. Yeah, they should support IDE drives. Don't know why you want them, but whatever :p

Would the Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G allow a Nvidia PCIe gfx card? I really need Nvidia for Linux driver support.

I've been fighting ATI & Linux for 10 years now and have heard all the promises many times before. I have a Lenovo laptop with ATI and it is a nightmare.

As in... you can actually get it to work. Besides, the nVidia GTX series aren't as good as GeForce when it comes to Linux support, so you'd be looking at a 9800 to save yourself the effort.

Well no, most of the time I use software rendering in Linux because the ATI drivers never work...

Anyway, I can stick to ATI if the price-performance is really any better.
I just priced up an i5 system and the cost is not so much higher. For about £450 (no case, no optical drive, but including an HIS HD 4870 512Mb or NV GTS 250). Seems prices here in Switzerland are a little cheaper.

Any good reviews showing i5 performance against AMD quadcore?

Well the C2Q 9***s were better than most of the Phenom IIs, and the i5 is it's replacement.

It all depends on what card really, but i've got it working fine.
