well im royally confused.....i really want a 580 but i hear new cards from both Nvidia and ATI are pending.....will these be better for same cash? whilst dropping 580 costs?, i dunno

currently i have an Ati 4890 and i have the cash from xmas/birthday (26 dec) so i have 400 to spend...

im looking for ideas guys is £400 going to be enough for the new cards, if it is will those ones really beat the 580???

suggestions?

Just get the 580, NVidias new cards are a way off yet, and AMDs new cards are rivals for 580, but in terms of cost as well as performance, so just get 580

still waiting for the drivers that improve the 6970 and thats been out a year :p

:P

The 6xx0 series are all based on older tech though so not much could be done to squeeze more performance out of that core sadly. This is something new though and I have fond memories of the 5870 drivers which gave massive performance increases around the time nvidia announced the 480GTX lol.

they said driver updates would improve performance by 20-30% over time on the 6*** series of cards , so dont hold your breath anytime soon of getting much faster 7970's than whats already been tested . o/p go for the 580

Thats highly specific to games though. Look at AVP as an example, where pretty much every single cat release had increases in performance for it over the previous set lol.

At that price you might as well wait and see if you can pick up a 7970.

Well......i burst my load early...i could'nt wait 5 mins never mind a month....

MSI GeForce GTX 580 OC Twin FrozR II 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card is on its way today

thanks for the input guys....i love overclockers...

you chose well. maybe a 3gb model would have been a little sweeter but still :P the only other decent alternative to your choice would have been crossfired 6950s, I would have even said crossfired 6850/6870s but the 1gb ram each card is limited to just wouldn't suit the gpu speeds, why they have never made a 2gb model of this card is beyond me, they would have however probably overpriced the damn thing so it was fractionally cheaper than a 6950 anyway.

The GTX 580 is £380 & 7970 is £450+?

id wait a few weeks and wait for the mad rush to decline and I think you will pick up a 7970 for sub 400.

as for the 580, who knows? nvidia might slash the prices.

buying a gfx card soon is all about the timing.

Edit ive seen you have bought a card, enjoy :)
