Hi chaps,

I've just become a student again, why I'm not to sure but there we go!

The laptop I used for my original degree is now ancient, I need a new one to haul around to the Library for study and when there are no computers free.

The trouble is laptops seem so damn big nowadays.

Ultrabooks seem to fit the bill of what i need. Small, portable, but still able to sit at it for prolonged periods and knock out assignments.

Next problem I have is cost. I have the max of £400 to spend. So really looking at £350 mark.

For word processing, office, internet, videos etc.

Anybody have any suggestions as I really am lost when it comes to laptops and Ultrabooks currently on the market.

Thanks.

Graham

Try dell outlet.

For your budget an ultrabook is out of the question really. Go to the business Dell outlet and pick up a 13/14 inch vostro as its the only small laptop I can think of in your budget, perhaps get an ssd too.

It all depends. If you think you can go down to an 11.1" (screen res 1366x768) then take a look at the ACER Aspire V5-171-32364G32. It can be had for less than your budget if you search around (no linking on here of course) and has a decent core i3 in it, I have the same one from about 4 years back (mines a dual core ULV pentium) and it's a great little machine, so I can only assume the latest is as good if not better.

The keyboard is just big enough to be able to type on, though for very long essays a separate keyboard may be useful, the other nice thing is that, in my experience, Acer's battery life claims are fairly accurate. So when they say 5 hours, chances are you'll get 5 hours (mine stated 7 and for the first 2 years I got over 7 on many occasions).

Worth a look at least :)

I wouldn't normally recommend Toshiba, but the 13.3" Satellite Pro L830 is available for under £400 with a Sandybridge i3.

That's not an ultrabook though.

OP - For that bugdet you can get some nice laptops, but as has been said, ultrabooks are going to be a fair bit more than what you're wanting to spend.

Hi chaps,

Thanks for the views on budget Ultrabooks.

Funnily enough I went looking for ultrabooks at the local highstreet purvayor of such things and they had the Acer Aspire v5 171349 in for £350. Some of the 11.6 screens in store were a little limiting with small keyboards but the Aspire seemed to feel quite natural to type with and with an i3 and 4gb ram it should be quick enough.

Were also a couple of Sony Vaio's there in 11.6 and 13.3 format including the svt1311 for on or just above £400.

I would be interested to hear why people think these would not really be suitable?

To be honest I don't go to the high street shops as they are usually overpriced and I consider an 11 inch to be too small to be usable. Out of curiosity what models have you seen for around £400? I've been looking online for my sister as she wants a 13ish inch laptop and I've found the Dell 14z and Vostro to be good buys for around £300-400. Both with i5 and possible matt screen.

hmm for that budget its gonna be tough to get a nice ultrabook. I recently purchased a HP Envy 6. It says its an ultrabook but there was an ASUS Zenbook next to it which blows it away in terms of weight and size. However the Envy was £600 vs the grand that the zenbook was going for.

I did see the aspire in the store i was in and yea I think thats your best option for the budget you are on. For the best bang for you buck however I would go for a vostro in that price range. They do some pretty good deals over at DELL.
