400W, will it be enough?

win power atx-400

nothing special, i don't think. It came with my case when i bought it about 3yrs ago.

Also how will i know if its not up to the job, will it just not power up or do something else?

Just had a quick go on the Extreme PSU Calculator and it comes in at 272watts so you should be covered in theory.

Wattage is not everything, though. The other main factor is how many amps the unit has @ 12V. As mentioned, I doubt you'll have enough.

@12V it has 18 amps according to the sticker on it

18 amps@12v is only 216W, and ATi cards are well know for their thirst for power.

At least 85W for the amd processor under load, another 10w per hard drive (perhaps more depends how much if any the drive draws on the 5v rail, so much variation in HDD power requirements), thats only leaving 110W for the GPU, and anything else which fancy's a bit of 12v (Optical drives/fans etc)

PSU's also lose capacity as they age, so you'll likely be overloading it when the PC's drawing full power, certainly not an ideal prospect.

Actually, the 1950 is one of the most efficient cards when it comes to system performance : power consumption.

Nevertheless...

@ OP: Your current PSU is a POS. Please please please change it.

Yup, looks like a trip to the local computer shop 2moro, i'll also need to pick up a molex 2 pci-e cable aswell as i forgot to order one. Maybe i'll get lucky and the new PSSU will have one
