Hey guys the oldest component in my build is now a 1080ti, it's getting on for 7 years old now according to my overclockers online account and I'm in a very fortune situation where I can now finally afford an upgrade.

So I'm looking at a 4080 and wondering if anything will cause a massive bottleneck or issue? I noticed overclockers also have a 4090 for 400 more (most are way more but they have one for just 400 more) is this something I should go for? I understand that I'd need a new psu to even attempt that as they need 850w yeah?

Anyway I'll stop waffling and look forward to all your expert replies, thank you so much.

Windows 11

64gb ddr4

MSI mpg x570 gaming pro carbon

Ryzen 7 3800x

1080ti

750w psu

What brand/model is the PSU? Does it have a 12/16 pin?

What resolution/refresh do you play at and what kind of games?

So I'm looking at a 4080

Any reason you don't want AMD? Do you do any stuff that needs CUDA, for example?

That I'm not 100% Sure but I think it's corsair.

4k and as high as possible but I'm also a professional photographer and video editor, I edit videos in 4k using resolve and edit photos in lightroom and photoshop.

Ivr always found Nvidia performance to be better, I did try a 5700xt but was underwhelmed (on a friend's pc) I appreciate that's not an apples for apples comparison

If it is a decent model, it might handle a 4090, but hard to say 100%.

In that case (assuming you can comfortably afford it), I'd pay the extra.

For professional use, I would stay nvidia, unless you have confirmation that it performs well in all your important work apps. You might be interested in the content creation articles on this website, but keep in mind that driver and app updates can change performance a lot (for both).

Is there anything this doesn't do that day the Asus at 2 grand does?

You might want to check out the 4090 threads, like here and here, since the most comment I can offer you is: 2 year warranty on £1600, eww.

I know I could do wirh a cpu upgrade shortly, but for a few months I assume it won't be a handicap?

Content: it depends on the CPU/GPU bias in your work apps. If you have a heavy CPU bias in the apps you use, then you'll notice next to nothing. If you have a heavy GPU bias, the 4090 will likely blow your socks off.
Games: it depends on the game and the settings you're using, but at 4K, I'd expect most games to show large gains. If you're playing e.g. games that are very CPU dependent, then yes, it could be an issue (mainly on 1%/0.1% lows in newer games, or top-end FPS in old competitive games).

Ach bugger it, I'll get a 4090, I'll have a to wait a few weeks till pay for the extra lol.

My lads pc has a corsair 850w Modula psu, he's currently running a 1070ti, I'll give him my 1080ti ans swap out his psu for mine, my youngest csn then have my older lads 1070ti (up from a mid range AMD card)

So everyone is happy and it saves me having to buy another psu, happy days (apart from my wallet lol)

What cpu should be next on my list and I assume my mobo is fine currently?

Thanks yall

Edit ****do ocuk now have a shop front in their brand new giant place? I pass once a week and miss the old shop front rhst closed in covid pulling me in making me buy more **** I wouldn't online ***

Just purchased a 4090 from OCUK online, shame there isn't a store to ask this as my local but do I need a special power adapter or do they come with them these days? My 850w corsair won't have a 16pin (I think that's what's needed) as its a year or so old

The 4090 will be supplied with a 3 PCI-E to 12VHPWR adaptor. Your Corsair PSU depending on the model will have up to 4 of the PCI-E cables already.

You can use the cable below which uses 2 x PCI-E out from the Corsair PSU to the 12VHPWR connector on the 4090. I use one on my 4080 + 5 year old Corsair 850W PSU without issue. 600W maximum as each output from the Corsair can supply 300W.

So long as your Corsair PSU has typ 4 cables it's good to go.

Looking at userbenchmarks on paper the 5800x3d only gives an improvement of 20%, is it wise to grab that cpu now? Or wait a month or 2 and upgrade to am5? The 7900x3d for example seems to be closer to 40% but we are looking st ovrt £600 with a new motherboard to support am5

Maybe I should open a fresh topic.
