I'm fairly new to overclocking and I was having trouble overclocking my AMD a64 4200+x2 at all. I noticed that my pci exp clock were set at 100 mhz but the pci setting was at auto, the options are auto, to cpu and 33mhz. I have set it at 33mhz and this SEEMS to have made it better. I have also set the dram voltage at 2.7 as this was on auto before as well (my ram is guaranteed up to 3.0v, ocz ddr400 platinum). Is this the right thing to have done?

I have just increased the fsb to 220x11 for now but I have left the ram at 400 and HT at auto (making the HT link 1100 and the memory 220 ((ddr 440))). Am I right in thinking that if I want to go further I should turn the ram to 333 and the HT to 4x? Also at what point should I start to tweak the vcore, its on auto now 1.36.
My temps are within acceptable levels, not getting above 53,54 at load so hopefully might be able to get more out of it as I'm preety sure that the cpu is throttling my new 8800 gt.

specs:
A64 4200+, A8N e mb, 2 gb ddr 400, 8800 gt bfg oc.

in a word, yup.

you up the Vcore to attempt to stabilise a clock, a good way to test is to run superpi on a 32mb test. if it passes, you should be fine. However your temps are not that good, 54oC is quite hot for an X2, you should be aiming to keep it between 40 and 50 under load.

an Arctic cooler and some arctic silver 5 thermal paste should do the trick.

Looking at my coretemp logs it stays below 50c most of the time, the 53, 54 is just the absolute maximum and seems to just come up rarely (individually), it seems to be at 48, 50 most of the time under load, 28,29 at idle.
Its strange because asus probe 2 says its at about 41c while coretemp is giving me 48, 50 ish.

The hs+f I use (akasa 876) is actually a similar design to the arctic freezer 64 but it scored slightly better at cooling on frostytech.com, I used the compound that was pre applied though.

I've now turned my HT to 4x, my mem to 333 and my fsb to 250x11 giving me 2750mhz from 2200 stock. In cpu z it says my HT is at 1000mhz and my mem is at 196.4 so I've clocked it up to its normal speed (nearly). My cpu temps max out at 50, 58 in core temp but only 45c in asus probe2, the core temp results fluctuate wildly and 50, 58 is the absolute max which is still high. The more I clock up the wider the gap between the two temps seems to get but in asusprobe it seems to rise at a steady rate?

My 3dmark score has increased from 8200 with cpu at stock to 9455 at 2750 mhz the 8800gt is at stock and I've not touched the clocks on that because if its being throttled by the cpu theres not much point, is there??

I hope it can keep up these speeds but not bad for a first (proper) overclock.
