Hi all,

Im on a budget of £50 inc VAT and not sure between these cards. I ideally want it to Nvidia as I use linux.

OcUK GeForce 8500 GT 256MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
£46.99

Asus GeForce EN7600GS Silent HTD 256MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI
£46.99

Asus GeForce EN7300GS-HTD 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express)
£37.59

Leadtek GeForce 8400 GS 256MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI
£35.24

I dont mind it been the cheapest as long as it can play games such as CSS well.

Cheers
all

my 6800 GT runs Css prefectly fine. So the 7600 would be fine. Could always go cheaper probably. The game was designed to run on dx4 i beleive... or was it 6. So it doesn't need a lot to run it.

Also why do you need nivida for linux?

He wants Nvidia for Linux because ATi drivers in Linux are pretty bad compared to NV.

it's a 7600 GS not GT

But it should be ok

I have the GT version and don't see the reason to upgrade yet.

Would this be ok for css on goodish settings?

Asus GeForce EN7300GS-HTD 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI

You're much better off paying the £10.60 extra as the 7600 is a lot better than the 7300 Spooter.

Thanks for your advice all, I have just ordered the

Asus GeForce EN7600GS Silent HTD 256MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express)

Its the most I could afford and considering my old card was a OC UK ATI X700 Pro this should be a nice upgrade.

I agree that this is the best card from those you originally listed, but i wouldnt expect a huge performance boost (at stock clocks anyway).

The X700pro is about 9700pro / 9800pro specs & the 7600GS is slightly faster than a 66600GT which itself wasnt far quicker than a 9800pro.

Too late now... but I'd have said go for the 8500GT personally - they handle shaders and stuff better than the 7600GS and overclock like mad...

Agreed, x700pro -> 7600GS is a bit of a sideways move, relatively speaking. That said, under linux I guess the difference may be more pronounced....

With that budget the most sensible thing to do would be to go second hand in my opinion. You'll get way more for you money :p

You could pick up a second user 7600 GT for between £30- £40 if you look in the right places ;)

Yep, go second hand get a 7600gt.

At 1280x1024 in source games like HL2 and CS:S i get 60-70fps with everything max'd.... max AA/AF and HDR enabled.

Hi guys thanks for your advice,

What I meant with The X700 Pro is that I had it in my old PC to play games such as Fear, HL2 and that I was happy with the game quality. I have now given that PC to my parents which was a AMD 64 3000, 1 Gig 4200 memory. I now have the PC in my Sig which is better and combined with the new budget 7600Gs which is better than the X700 Pro I should be happy with the gaming performance.

I will post back when I have tried it 2nite and let you know what I think.

Cheers everyone...Its a good forum.

Hope it works out okay for you. Myself, I would 've hassled someone to lend me the extra £10-12 for the OcUK 7600GT, as you get much better performance than the GS

I've actually just sold a brand new warranty replacement BFG 7600GT OC on fleabay for £40... I might be selling the other one I bought as a stopgap as I just ordered a 8800GTS 320mb... but we'll see how that turns out.

I love 7600GTs. I think they were, perhaps still are, one of the best cards for price/performance/power consumption/noise. Works great with my OSx86 Hackintosh too! (Hmmm... thats a point, will I be able to get the 8800GTS to work under OSx86? Hmmm...)
