or

i7 9** / x58

or

AMD Phenom x4 or x6 / 890FX

Primarily a gaming set-up with Xfire 5850 cards.

£450 for the 3 components, i have everything else.

What would you suggest ?

Cheers.

I would go with SB and read the threads Gibbo has done and hopefully you will be safe.

motherboard does 8X/8X

Ah sorry didn't read OP properly and that you have dual 5850s, my bad.

Not a big fan of Foxconn here after experiencing their customer services first hand and their monumental lack of BIOS/driver updates. But in terms of value for money, that boards got to be right up there.

This would be my choice:

Mobo does 8x8x CF, RAM is a better clocker than Corsair XMS3 (or so says Gibbo, RJK, Ace etc :p) and a bigger shinier cpu.

After you mentioned it in that other thread, I just had to go check (could such a cheap board do it right?), and seems you were right, reviews suggest the foxconn switches too 8X/8X

Yeah, Foxconn seem to provide boards with very good features for very little comparatively.

I haven't seen them for a good year or so, good to see a comeback.

Yeah true, my Foxconn Bloodrage GTI is a great looking board and overclocks my i7 D0 to 4GHz at 1.274v. Their support, however, has much to be desired. In particular their lack of drivers/BIOS updates on their website. I have to go to a forum that one of their former employees posts on to get any sort of decent support and updates.
