Hi i have £450 to spend could go a little over.

Will use it mainly for D/L and games would need to be linux compatible as well.
Not going to overclock right away but may do at some point in the near future

Don't need a monitor as have 19" widescreen already.

Cheers

Couldnt fit in keyboard and mouse but this is an excellent spec for the money, you could get keyboard and mouse later and use generic ones now.

would it cause compatibility problems if i changed from an ATI card to a Nvidia one? and would it be worth spending a little more on a larger HD. or will spending slightly more give me much in the way of a performance boost compared to that spec? say an extra £50?

Google to see if components are compatible with linux, im sure either graphics would be. For the price the ATI will give you the best performance, you could spend a bit more and get an ATI 3850 (£95) which is great performance for the price. Nvidia isn't too good on lower end cards atm. If you want more HD space then add £20 and get a 500gb one if you like. If i were to add £50 to the build i would get the better ATI graphics card i mentioned. I just ordered my parts the other day and that includes the processor i have shown you. It is faster than a quad-core at about 60-70% of things it does and is £50 cheaper, thats why i got it.

this is what i would do i know you said you dont want to overclock but this cpu with that board should hit 2.8ghz with no tampering of anything but the fsb and sit there nicely on stock cooling or will do ok the way it is, personally though id oc and get the better compnants as for linux compatible
i have no idea what is linux compatible but these are popular parts.

i know its a little over budget but its money well spent and you said you didnt mind a little over budget

extra hard drives are possible, up to the count of 3

Am i missing something? isnt £20 quite low for a DVD rewriter?

@Damien you say that CPU could get to 2.8? and it would not need much to run like that? how fast could the CPU first suggest oc to easily?

£20 is about the going rate for a dvd writer these days there very inexpensive items and the samsung is certainly a very highly regarded writer and has had some excellent reviews.
as for the cpu a guestimate would be around 3.1 on stock cooling after that id say youd seriously need to think about a tuniq tower to keep it comfortably cool though core 2's are generally very thermally kind and run pretty cool.
though id say the graphics card would certainly make up for this compared to a x1950 pro and is a lot faster than the 3850 series so its a good trade off cpu for gpu

Fair enough. Go for his if you want better gaming performance, go for mine if you want better system performance. Both are good builds.

Could i mix n match between the two specs? like the top spec with the hard drive from the spec below? and maybe the graphics card from the spec below as well?

ifs its for linux why spend 150 on a graphics card?

what exactly is the rig going to be used for? if you dont plan on playing games the extra dosh would be better spent on a bigger hdd or better cpu. if its budget for the office then could go even cheaper. do you need case etc. i've priced my new pc up at 250 with a decent spec but its going to be used as a server so gpu was only 30 notes.

I might put windows on there as well and its not going to be brand new games just a bit of gaming, i don't really know what kind of graphics card i will need though i would like something that could at least play half life 2 nicely. With cases do i just need one that is the same size? i don't really care what it looks like.

yeh i was under the impression it would be used to dual boot between a windows os and linux, but if its purely a linux box then toothe is spot on you can spend in other areas and still save dosh

i'd skimp a little on ** graphics card. get a x1950 or hd3850. its not worth paying loads for a gpu that isnt going to be used when you can save money or buy a better mobo/cpu/hdd.
