so im thinking..

Ive got the chance of getting a cheap 4590 and an Z97 Asus Maximus VII Hero board so my lad is currently running an FX8350 and an Asus crosshair v formula z board.

so would the 4590 be an upgrade?

clock for clock it would **** all over the fx

Id say its worth it but depends what games and other tasks you use your machine for to how much benefit you will see.

Depends how cheap..
I think I could cover the cost with selling the AMD board and CPU or not far off it.

plus Im the original owner of the Z97 board so the warranty is in my name.
At least with that board you have i7K options.
this was my thoughts. it means if I can pick up a 4790k through time he can get my 4770k

it would be for my lad.
,(going to get him some racing games for his xmas) so would be things like dirt rally and grid auto sport ( think that's right )
also the first grid as he has that on disc.

He currently plays Roblox, Batman Arkham City, the crew, Gta 4.

as for other use he uses it for google and youtube...

4 strong cores vs 8 very weak ones.

Given most (all) games only utilise 4 cores it's a no brainer

I had thought this. I know when I went from the 8350 to the 4690k I noticed a good difference. I just wasn't sure about the 4590

Usual nonsense being spouted by the usual people in this thread. Could explain why its guff, but I'll let this man do it instead:

In turn, usual trash put forward by those who for some reason cannot accept AMD's massive inferiority, and use random youtube videos which cherry pick games that are not particularly CPU heavy.

I have an FX-9370 and it's vastly inferior to Haswell/Skylake i5 in CPU dependent games (and there are plenty of them as well).

There are literally hundreds of professional benchmarks showing the simple truth that the FX line bottlenecks high-end cards hard. Yes, there will be some games that it doesn't bottleneck. But that's pretty useless when there are plenty others that it does.

Depends on the GPU and the screen res.

hes running 1080 and using an msi 7950 at the moment but I will be upgrading my GPU so hell get my gtx 970 once I upgrade.

I know when I went from the 8350 to the i5 4690k I noticed a nice difference and I was running the 7950 at the time.

on other thoughts... I had the 8350 at 4.6Ghz when I went to the 4690k but I also put that to 4.4Ghz where as the 8350 is running stock in my lads machine and the 4590 wont O/C hence im wondering at stock clocks will the i5 perform better? as said previously it also opens up the option of keeping my eyes open for either an i5 k or i7 k to replace the 4590 with through time.

im running a 4770k in my own system at the moment and I know its like night and day compared to the old 8350

Assuming you adjust GPU settings to achieve stable 60fps, in some games they will perform similar - GTA V, Witcher 3 spring to mind.

Other games that are very CPU dependent, the FX-8350 will show weakness (not unplayable, but slower with much worse minimum frames)

If the sale of the old parts more or less covers the cost I'd do it, it guarantees a more more stable and reliable performance in general and you have the potential to up to k models, or i7's, later on in the game.

By massive inferiority do you mean 20-25% per core maximum.

People who have only been into PCs for a couple of years have absolutely no idea how good they have it these days.

GTA5 really light on the CPU (lol).

I'd be looking at 4670k/4690k minimum personally, if I was going to swap so it could then be overclocked.
