Helping a friend OC his 4690k and I've noticed got it up to 4.2 on stock volts. However I'm quite concerned by the fluctuating temps and how high they are.

It's hitting 82 peak but fluctuates between 71 and 82 when on a prime test. Any ideas?

I don't use prime anymore as it puts the cpu under more strain than it will ever likely be put under in normal day to day usage. I find just normal usage or some light gaming will flush out a bad overclock without the torture of your cpu.

Yeah I get that but it's much easier to just get a more than stable clock. Seeing as the PC is for gaming, programming, CAD and rendering.

Anyone got an recommendations? He is a Brocken 2 in it, he put this in himself but I'm certain he has done it wrong because it doesnt point out the back of the case it points to the top but I'm not familiar with the mounting system for it so not 100% sure. I

I think that also might be why the temps are so high but still not sure why its fluctuating. I'm gonna reseat it for him later and have a look at the mounting system etc.
