Hi Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade to either Ryzen 7 1800x or 8700k, from my old 4690k. The big question is, is it worth it? Or am I wasting cash?

I only use my machine for gaming.

Cheers,

get a 4770k/4790k, sell the 4690k for a cheap and quick upgrade, the prices of components (esp ram) currently is senseless.

At that res you aren't looking at much of an upgrade. Drop a 4790k in there if your minimums are dropping too low.

In games with the 1800X your not gaining anything over the 1700 or even the 1600/X, personally in your shoes i would get the Ryzen 1600 and overclock it, its a great 6 core 12 thread CPU for relatively no money.

The the 4790/4770K may give you a small uplift in performance but its only short term as its still only a 4 core, all be it with Hyper threading, compared with the Ryzen 1600 wich will give you much better longevity especially given also that AMD are committed to the AM4 socket so upgrades to Ryzen 2 and 3 its just a case of getting the CPU for the board you buy now.

I has a massive improvements going from my 3570k @ 4.8 to my 8400 @ 3.8

4 cores without hyper threading get too full in a lot of situations and give you bad mins. I would just put an i7 in your existing board and overclock it.

Probably cost you only £100 to swap cpu over and the 4770k clocked up is same performance as the coffeelake at 1440p

If DDR4 was still 50 quid for 16GB, then yes absolutely Ryzen would be worth it.

All the while 16GB is costing nearly as much as the CPU, then no not so much.
