Hi everybody,

got my system running woh!!! spent the whole of last night trying to fit the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, my specs are. I am bit

concerned about my temperatures, i've only got one fan running at the moment, i might attach the nexus fans later on.

My cpu temp reading, this is direct copy from the PC Health Status menu in the CMOS.

Cpu temp; 45c/113f
System temp; 34c/93f
PWM temp; 51c/124f
CPU fan speed; 1155 RPM
system fan speed; 0 rpm
aux1 fan speed; 0 rpm
aux2 fan speed; 0 rpm
cpu core voltage; 1.17v
ddr2 voltage; 1.92v
cpu vtt voltage; 1.19v
mch 1.25v voltage; 1.25v
atx +12v; 11.89v
atx +3.3v; 3.26v

I've got a fan mate, i haven't attached that, the internal wiring is not so good. Just in case your ask i have the fan blowing into the ultra.

..... the internal wiring is not so good.......

if thats the wiring in the case for drives etc that might be part of the problem cos of the airflow.

are you sure the cooler was secured properly and you didnt add too much thermal paste ?

try taking the side off the case and see if that reduces the temp.

edit:

what fans do you have running on the case and which way are they sending the air flow ?

As a guide I have the same processor/cooler and its around 29-34 degrees idle overclocked to 3ghz.

Do you have the cooler fan blowing out the back of the machine? or towards an exhaust port?

Is the cooler fan on the right way round, its blowing through the fins and not sucking?

i think i added too much thermal paste but i am not sure, cause this is my first build in like 4 years. if i decide to reply the paste, i just use any cloth and rubbing alcohol right?

This is not mine, but this is the way the only fan (the one on the cpu) is facing

both sides of the case are off.

thanks

long as u don't leave any residue on the processor u should be ok.

check the cooler fan see which way the arrows point to indicate air flow.

that's fine.

If it's idling at 46 with your fan like that, then the HSF is either mouted incorrectly, or there's too much/too little thermal paste :)

Have you tried reseating it?

hold on, hold on.

Don't 'just use anything' to clean it...

You need a cleaner that doesn't leave any substance behind (don't use white spirit / meths). Get the proper artic-clean stuff, or neat Isopropyl Alchohol.

For the cloth, it's got to be 'lint free'. Best thing to use is one of those little cloths for cleaning your glasses with. Don't use paper towel / tissue / your sleave because it'll leave debris all over the chip.

Head over to the official Arctic silver website for instructions (for cleaning / and for reapplying).

ok thanks for feedback, a few more questions. Do i use the Isopropyl Alchohol first then the lint free cloth?

What if i carry on with 46c for say 2/3 hrs would i damage my system? what is idle temp for the system i posted?

thanks

no, you wouldn't damage the system.
These chips run upto 85 before throttling, and most people here feel safe pushing past 60C.

Before you panic too much, how warm is you house at the moment? If your load temps aren't much higher then you could be fine (not great, but okay).

Are your case fans actually turning round?

Does the heatsink need lapping. There is a very good chance that the base of the heatsink is not flat.

my room isn't that warm, i don't want to lap anything. I suspect its because i didn't mount the heatsink propely, either too much thermal paste or to little.

I had quiet a touch time putting in the ultra, it wasn't a clean mount what i mean is basically I moved it around a little bit because I put the X shaped holder late.

Ok how do i clean of the paste. Do i use Isopropyl Alchohol first with a Q-Tip (ear bud) or do i use the lint cloth first?

thanks

Use a blank bit of newspaper (what I always use and my x2 3800 is running at 26 deg in my 21deg room), it wont leave any fibers behind, also good for cleaning windows with vinegar. Don't apply too much paste either.

Also can you feel any heat coming from the PSU or is its all going out the back, with only 1 fan it could be that your not getting enough air in (actually I doubt that if it runs at 1155rpm)?

the psu isn't even that loud, i looked at the fan of the psu its spinning very slowly, and yes some heat is comming out of the psu from the back. Please check out the temp on the beginning of the thread.
