Just had a wheel bearing replaced on a car that has 46k on the clock.

Is this acceptable for a 06 plate car to have a wheel bearing going so soon?

A lot of friends are saying I should complain as this is not acceptable at all on new-ish car. I don't know what to do as I had it replaced at a good price I've been told, £124 at a Ford Dealership.

Thanks for any advice.

They can go at any time in theory, completely depends on the use and if the car has taken any shock through potholes and the like.

As for "new-ish", it's 5 years old.

They can go at anytime, it wouldn't bother me.

Front or rear? Sounds pricey to me.

Probably depends on how the car has been driven and various other things like the rotational mass etc.

My wheel bearings are still original and so far still show no signs of wear. (16 years old @ 180k) Others with the same car have had them fail with half the mileage.

Would I be right in thinking lots of small journeys would affect their life span as well, due to the grease not being given enough time to warm up, or is cold grease just as good as warm grease as a lube ?

I read that as a wheel bearing replacement costing 46k :(

You can try to complain to the dealer that a wheel bearing should last longer and maybe get them to halve the cost but don't get your hopes up though.

I'd class it as a consumable item tbh and depending on how the cars been treated 46k could be about right.

I had two rear wheel bearings go on my 53plate clio just before its first mot (27k) wasn't a happy bunny) luckly it was still under warranty.

That's poor IMO, I'd expect a bearing to last at least 100k/10years.

Fords are well known for going through wheel bearings though, can only be down to them being made on the cheap with cut price materials.

Pretty poor to only last 46k imho. But unless you're under some kind of warranty I can't see who exactly you think you can complain to about it? Trading standards?? LOL. You're just going to have to suck it up I think, and £124 (inc parts and labour, I assume) is pretty damn cheap for anything at a main stealer. Woulda changed it myself personally mind you an a car that old.

These things cost a few quid each, did mine myself in an afternoon. Wouldn't want to pay £124 for them to be done, is that also just one or the axle pair?

But there lifespan is entirely random, when thy go they go, that's it! Slight chance it was overtightened by a millionth of a Newton at install and that has had repercussions, zero way of ever knowing though.

With a mondeo you change the whole hub if it's a rear and the part alone is over £100, but it takes about half an hour to do.

The more usual bearings that have to pressed in cost very little but are time consuming to change.

46k is a low mileage for them to wear out, but plenty of time for a couple of kerb smacks or big potholes to cause premature failure. If they are not sunbjected to such trauma they should last the life of the car.
