4770k or ? for gaming

Reformatted.

Two 7970s can't manage 60fps average in Sleeping Dogs at that res [1440p], for example.

Even at 1080p lots [of other games] will have dips of <30fps when fully maxed out.

The new intels are coming next year so buying a new cpu now would be a risk.

The 3770K are a dead board now no future chips coming so like a 4770k buying a 3770k would be a waste an maybe a side step in stead of an upgrade.

There's plenty of benches regarding the 3 chips.

His best option would be stick with what he's already got an clock a bit higher wait till next year then buy current gen if there's an improvement.

I doubt the next line of Intel chips will bring any major performance improvements (it's the same story each year so far). The only noticeable differences are the temps which seem to get hotter! There's also no point in waiting for the next best thing either as you'll always be waiting. I still say just pop in a 3770k and it'll be fine... It's only a side step for games and other software that are limited to 4 threads.

Anyone upgrading or building a decent gaming rig now should always consider a CPU with more than 4 threads and a GPU with more than 2GB VRAM.

Given that the WOT engine is poor, what you will say if my statement was "GTX780 @1300 sucks, get a 7950 which is cheaper and performs the same"
(try it yourselves at same maxed out settings)

Picking one game to make a point isn't fair, especially there are so many parameters to consider.

How Sleeping Dogs performs NOW with cat 13.11 on 2 7950s compared to single GTX780 or 290X?

How 2 7950s perform on Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, Bioshock or BF3-4 compared to GTX780 or 290X?

If in doubt see the reviews where the 7990 is and remove 10%-15% performance for stock speeds.

As your system is still pretty good i would wait and see how much of a change mantle brings to the gaming scene and Also how much the next get consoles effect how games are program.

I am sure we will see a move towards more threads being used Putting i5 at a disadvantage and while the i7 is a safe bet the way mantle works may mean you wont need anything more than a 8320 saving lots of money

I think you're missing the point. You asked to name one game, so I named one game. There are loads (most of the recent demanding titles) that require more than 7950 CF, this is nothing to do with drivers, AMD or nvidia.

If you look at it like "you need to upgrade now" then yes i agree with what you wrote.

But if its just considering an up grade then no, waiting would be the best option he's up grading from a 3570 an jumping to either a 3770K or 4770K.

wouldn't show much performance boost in gaming there's plenty of members on here already said the same thing as most have already made the jump an regretted it.

I swapped my 3570k over for a 3770k and i'm happy with my decision as i know i won't be kicking myself later (i sold a spare i5 2500 that went towards the cost of the 3770k and the 3570k is now in another PC :)). The OP could end up with a real bargain if he finds a good used 3770k and sells his 3570k .

If your i5 can reach 4.6-4.7Ghz then you wont have a bottleneck. If this is the case then the 15% reduction in cpu utilisation from and i5 to an i7 just isn't worth the upgrade or expense imo. Conversely if you cant run a stable overlock about 4.5Ghz then unfortunately the i7 is your only viable option.

I speak from direct experience as I have the same cards as you.

Its good when you drop on a decent chip.

But so far your the only person ive seen that's said there happy with the jump from 3570K to either 3770K or a 4770K, every other one has said there wasn't much performance boost during gaming hence why im still running my 2500K.

The only other time you'd the performance difference with the i5 over the i7 is with programs like encoding etc.

EDIT ONLY JUST NOTICED OP GOT A BUMMER CPU FOR OC. as Powerpie said go with a 3770K if you cant push the cpu higher.

Looking to go to 4770k myself for gaming. I'll be going from a 920 in sig though so the jump will likely be more noticable than a 3xxx.

Mines a not so good 3570k can push it to 4.3 max then volts need to jump way up which sends up temps. Using a h100 with corsair sp fans on it to.

The difference is i already knew there wouldn't be a noticeable improvement with most current games and therefore i couldn't be disappointed with the upgrade :D... I got the 3770k in preparation for games being released over the next couple of years, but there's always the chance i'll build a whole new PC within the next couple of years if AMD or Intel surprise us with anything new (which has not been happening lately) :).
