Just checking my temps are ok on new build as was worried at first & was going to reseat my heatsink...(temps shoot up right away in core temp when running prime.)

Quick list..

mobo Asus z87-pro
cpu 4770k not manually oc'd.
heatsink Noctua NH-D14 (PWM fans)

Idle temps are around 30 degrees..

Fired up core Temp & set prime95 at small fft's & ran for 20 mins..temps shot up quite quickly to nearing the eighties..which was got me worried..then remembered I'd set a bios setting (system performance) from normal to Asus optimal. (it increased wattage shown in core temp & mhz over 4000..ie..ran the cpu faster...but a lot of you will know that already :) )

So changed the setting to normal & wattage dropped/mhz went down to below 4000

Ran prime again at small fft's for 20 mins & temps hovered between 60/63 degrees...sigh of relief..

So...are the temps acceptable for either/both settings?? Obviously some kind of oc might have kicked in at the optimal setting...& being a gamer....& given the higher temps of optimal setting..(& I know prime punishes more than games)..Any opinions of if I should stick the system performance setting on normal or optimal?? (Not sure if the higher MHz/wattage on optimal setting only kick in when needed)

While I'm at it...there's a setting for cpu core ratio...currently set at default of per core....should I leave it at this or set it to auto or synch all cores??

Any feedback appreciated as always. TIA..Andy.

You should do any overclocking from the Bios, not from the software.. you have no idea what kind of volts it is pushing through at load unless you run CPU-Z during prime.

No way to know if temps are fine without knowing volts and mhz. For stock they are high, for non-stock no.

I would stop if temps go above 85. As already said do a proper job with your expensive cpu and overclock from bios

i run 4.2 and have temps of around 65

Cheers...I think a point is missed somewhere that I've not oc'd anything via software.. In fact not intentionally o/c'd anything. There was 3 presets within the bios itself for system performance...green/normal/optimal. Was preset to normal. I've switched back & forth between BIOS setting of normal/Optimal.

When I used core temp I got these readings.

Normal bios setting...

Core voltage fluctuates at desktop (cpuid) 1.13-1.2v (bios itself shows cores at 1.056v or something similar per core)

Frequency 3.7...3,9 GHZ (don't understand that one)

power at idle around 11 watts..stays around the 84 watt TDP under prime95 & temps hit around 60 deg after 20 mins.

bios optimal setting.....

core voltage (cpu-z) 1.219

Frequency 4.1-4.3GHZ

power shoots to around 112 watts..past the 84w TDP. & temps hit 70-80

Strangely enough I thought the temps at 60's with 20 mins prime were ok on normal bios settings...it was the 70-80's temps at optimal that got me worried...but I could be totally wrong hence the original post.

Anyway if oc'ng myself will be nothing more than upping the multi..& adjusting voltage if needed & dropping down till stable. (Yes been down that road already on last build ;) but nothing more than that.

cheers again.
