4770k temps

Hi,

I am putting a small overclock on my i7 4770k cpu to 4.2ghz - everything seems fine with respects to the pc running but the temps hit around 85 to 90 degrees Celsius under load.

I wonder do I need to lower my cpu vcore in the bios? It looks to me like it is set to auto @ 1.371 volts which seems a tad high perhaps?

I am using the gigabyte z87 oc motherboard and so far all I have done is upped the multiplier from the default 35 up to 42.

You can change that manually to a lower voltage and test to see if stable.

I find on my gigabyte board that the auto setting sets the voltage higher than it needs to be.

What cooler do you have?
 
1.3 seems overly high for 4.2, you should be able to get that with 1.2 or so max I would have thought. IF you can find it there a great haswell gigabyte overclocking thread on various forums. That explains lis of details in-depth fir the gigabyte boards abd haswell in general.
 
Yeah set to 1.2 Vcore and it was running much cooler at 4.2Ghz. Playing Crysis 3 my max temps were 75 degrees with typical temps closer to 60, where yesterday I was getting anywhere between 75 and 90 degrees!

Maybe my chip could clock a bit higher but I figure 4.2Ghz is a good boost from stock so will probably just leave it here.
 
1.371!! These motherboards do love to overvolt. My 4770k at 4.5Ghz runs happily all day at 1.2Vcore
 
That voltage is very high for 4.2!

An Easy 4.4/4.5/4.6GHz Template:
Here are the settings I used; you can use them as a template for your settings:
Profile #1 Basic Profile:
CPU VRIN Override LLC: Set to Extreme (this is to make sure VIN doesn’t droop)
CPU VRIN Override Voltage: 1.7-2.0v (reduce if temperatures too high is causing instability, increase if temperatures are fine and you are unstable)
VCore: 1.24-1.34v
Ring Voltage: 1.15 or 1.2v
CPU Multiplier: 44x-46x
BCLK: Auto
Turbo: Auto
C1E, C3, C6/C7, and EIST: All Disabled (There is a table in Step #1 which describes the behavior or different power saving features and what to enable/disable to get the behavior you want.)

It's the Be Quiet Dark Rock 2 (Not the Pro) - A decent air cooler by all accounts.

Yeah seems so! runs for me much cooler and just the same performance at 1.2V - I could potentially lower that voltage a bit from 1.2V but I may instead see if I can up the multi to 44 for 4.4Ghz.

Yeah saw those settings too, I don't really want to disable the power throttle stuff though as I only need it to up the speed when I am gaming or doing something intensive, the processor seems to do a good job of throttling itself back when just in Windows.

Want to grab a few benchmark scores though to see what real difference I would see if I upped the CPU clock a bit more. I suspect I would see bigger gaming benefits from upping the GPU clocks a bit, though I would bottleneck my GPU less with a better clock on the CPU too.
