Anyone know of a manufacturer of a motherboard which has a 478 socket fitment and a PCIexpress slot? Albatron do one but I can't find anyone that stocks it, Asus used to do one. Any ideas?

Asus do one, the P4GPL-X (P4 Socket 478 i915PL ATX PCIE x 16)

The Asrock one mentioned above had both a PCIE and AGP slot, but the PCIE slot only runs at 4x speed, though reviews say that this doesn't adversely affect the performance of current cards too much.

HTH.

If your going to go PCI-E, then you shouldnt stick with your S478, as it is the S478 design that will be a lot slower than any other chip currently on the market. If you can afford to get a PCI-E card then its best to get a new mobo & CPU at the same time.

S478 chips are doing very well second hand at the moment. It's a good time to get it on Members market. LGA775 chips are very cheap at the moment, new or second hand.

Everyone is waiting for Conroe and Intel are dumping prices to get the stuff moving.

Exactly! Im kind of stuck with S478 at the moment as im going to go for a huge upgrade next year sometime, when technology no doubt would have changed again. They might even have introduced the BTX standard by then, or has that been permanently chucked on the scrap heap almost as fast as it arrived? :p

Have a look at the FAQ section to find out. took me a while, but better to put decent posts around rather than saying things just for the hell of it. In saying that, I dont think there is another message forum anywhere else to do with computers that is as good as this place :D
