Basically have a tough choice between both these cards...which is best? :D
Will be playing at around 1900x1200 or slightly below
Exact cards:

ATI Radeon HD4870 PCI-E 2.0 512MB DDR5 DVI/HDMI

GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB PCI-E GDDR3 Dual DVI/TV-Out

If one is better than the other...by how much roughly?

Thanks in advance :D

Another thread rage you know which card is best the 4870 will be much faster than the gtx. The 4850 is faster than the gtx by a good margin when aa is applied. I have seen on some benches with aa the 4850 beating a gtx by upto 50% so a 4870 destroys a gtx. You can't go wrong buying any ati card atm where performance is concerned. In the 4870x2 v gtx280 thread you thought a gtx280 was better than the 4870x2 so you should know that a 4870 can beat a gtx280 in some games and on average is only 15-20 percent slower add in 8xaa the 4870 is as fast as the gtx280 so the 9800gtx is not even close.

Yeah ok...im not talking about the x2 though just the origional 4870. I was just kinda confused since they are roughly the same price and have never bought an ATI before :P

Ok then the simple answer is the 4870 is much faster than a 9800gtx especially with max detail and high aa. No real point in the 9800gtx atm as the 4850 is as cheap and better.

The 9800gtx is not as good imo as the 8800gtx which has a bigger bus and more memory you may see more fps from the 9800gtx at low res low aa but the limiting factor is the 256bit bus and gddr3 memory.

4870

and i'm not bias'd, as i'm running a 98oogtx myself, mate has 4870 though and apart from a really annoying fan controller (thinkin the new drivers are sorting that) its better in every way

It's sort of like this right now in ascending order of performance:

9800GTX
HD4850 = 9800GTX+ (give or take, depending on game and AA settings)
HD4870 = GTX260 (give or take .... 4870 dominates with AA though)
GTX260 Core 216 (marginally better than the normal 260)
GTX280 = 9800GX2 (depends on benchmark)
HD4870X2

Its not even a comparison. A 9800GTX won't play Crysis at all high at your res - a 4870 will (just about). 'nuff said.

+1

Moved from the 9800GTX to 4870 - the latter is a much better performer !!

The 9800GTX+ runs a little quicker than the 9800GTX but still, so far as I have read, no competition for the 4870.

the 9800GTX+ is such old tech, I would feel really weird buying one right now.

I mean almost 1 year ago I had a voltmodded 8800GTS 512mb which was clocked higher than a 9800GTX+ barring the memory :/
