4780 vs 9800

a friend of mine bought the same 8800gtx as i did from the same ebay seller and same batch all those years ago haha

and the 4870 which he now owns (a sapphire) he reckons is twice as powerfull as the 8800gtx. which is quicker than the 9800gtx due to the bus width.

the 9800GTX+ is such old tech, I would feel really weird buying one right now.

Lol old tech :p The GTX2x0 series are all 8800GTXs (G80) with more units, and a wider memory bus. There have obv. been some optimisations, but ultimately it's still an 8800.

4x00 series is based on the 2900XT (R600), and again, just more units, and hardware resolve re AA. Memory bus is actually smaller.

It's sort of like this right now in ascending order of performance:

9800GTX
HD4850 = 9800GTX+ (give or take, depending on game and AA settings)
GTX260
HD4870 = GTX260 Core 216 (marginally better than the normal 260)
GTX280 = 9800GX2 (depends on benchmark)
HD4870X2

Better. :)

Yes but what I meant was that the 9800GTX is almost the same as an 8800GTS...only clock speeds are a little different.

At least with the GTX 2xx they have loads more shaders and a wider memory bus....they are truly different cards.

i have a 4870 myself but poor drivers for ati are a bit bugging at the moment. not really sure whether the nvidia drivers are any better tbh. I would still go with a 4870 ;)
