i have received a second hand 4870x2 today and tried to install it, problem i have is that the 8pin cable will not fit into the socket on the card  the card runs with 2 6 pin connectors but blue screens with ATImpag.sys :(

i took the card apart and cleaned the heatsink out as it was caked in dust and got very hot.

i am wondering why my 8pin psu connector will not fit the card?

also will the 2 6 pins give the card enough power?

thanks

Not sure why the 8 pin plug won't fit into an 8 pin socket, must be a moulding issue either on the PSU side or gfx card, make sure its not upside down. Aslong as you have got all the plugs required plugged into the gfx card & connected to the PSU,you will get the power.

If the 8pin cable coming from your PSU doesn't fit into your graphics card then it's most likely that it's actually the 8pin power cable that some motherboards take.

This is an image of the 8pin for graphics card:

Notice the orientation of the clip at the top and the layout of the pins as follows:

top row = hex, hex, square, square
bottom row = square, hex, hex, hex

Notice the orientation of the clip at the top and the layout of the pins as follows:

top row = hex, square, hex, hex
bottom row = square, hex, hex, hex

So the differences between the two are only in the top row (nearest the clip).

What is the brand and model number of your PSU?

Hiper Type R 520w

the 8pin i have looks like the bottom configuration.

looks like i will have to get an adapter then.

thanks

Sounds like you got a card thats been tampered with as i got 2 of the 4870x2 and mine both got 8 pins and 2 6 pins and have no problem with them the 8 Pin should be the very edge of the card or it is on mine and but far as i know these cards only came with a 8 pin and 6 pin tho i have know people to mod them to there likeing Can you show us a picture of the card and is it Sapphire or Rads make? as there is quite a few models of the 4870x2

not been tampered with, the card has a 6pin and 8pin connections.

it looks like i don not have the correct 8pin adapter to connect to the card.

i tried the card with 2 6pin connectors but obviously does not supply enough power.

Cross your fingers using that Type R. :)

What's it's +12 V output?

The only info I can find is for the 580 W, which is down as 360 W, but that's an old PSU.

sorry it is the 580w.

i have had no issues with the psu at all and i've used many configurations with 2 6pin graphics cards and overclocked processors.

once i get the 8 pin connector i will try, and if there is a problem then i will change over to my spare 620w psu and see what happens.

Don't need to go that high, but a decent PSU which can do 500 W +12 V output would be the minimum I'd recommend.

That card on it's own can use 275-300 W under full load.

until i get enough funds for a decent psu is it possible to run the graphics card off a seperate psu? I know its not recommendable but would it work in the short term.

update:

got the new adapter. still no go.

checked psu rails on both psu's and they are both no good.

1 is 6.8v
1 is 7.2v

so definately after a new psu before i can test this card.

Can you post the model of your psu, and the 12v rail current rating can be found on the label of your psu like the one on the pic.

the Hiper 580w states 20a / 18a / 0.8a under the three 12v

can't get to the Coolermaster at the mo
