4790 vs 4790k

Well I've bought a 4770k now, I don't mind changing - what are people suggesting then? 4790k? (when available!) or a higher end one? At least I can use the system over the weekend now though!!

I'd get a 4790...it turbo's up to a guaranteed 4Ghz which is only 500-600mhz less than a overclocked 4790K seems to be reaching, unless you get lucky and buy a real peach of a part.

nearly £50 extra for about 10% more speed isn't a very good deal TBH.

I'd then swap to a Broadwell overclocker next year, they are bound to overclock much better being on the new 14nm die, with less power and heat.

As you've already bought a 4770k, stick with that for now & enjoy the machine. It'll do anything that you ask of it for the next few years

From my experience there's very little point in upgrading to the latest & greatest chip all the time. You end up just spending lots of money for little gain.

I would have got a Pentium Anniversary or something and then waited for a 4790K. They are said to run up to 15 degrees cooler, and are supposedly better clockers too.

A 4790K will most likely retain its value better than a 4770K as well, because now Devils Canyon chips are available, the 4770K will be remembered as "the one that got replaced because it ran hot and was rubbish for overclocking"

The Pentium Anniversary is pre-order though, so the op would still have to wait.

With the outrageous amount of money you've spent on a motherboard I would do what the other guys say and go X79 with 4930K, that way you get full native 16x-16x PCI-E (not PLX rubbish) and two extra cores, the 4930K will overclock to at least what a 4770K would and run MUCH cooler.

If the order has already been sent you can still always DSR them.

I hate to say it but... The 4790K's came in stock about 45 minutes ago.
