4790k any regrets?

I was building from new so no I do not regret waiting as this is more than powerful enough to play WOW and Elite apparently.

I upgraded from a 3770k and ASrock Z77 Fatal1ty Pro, to the 4790k and Asus Z97 Deluxe and I have no regrets at all.

My 3770k even at stock with a Noctua D14 was a hot chip, no issues with the board, really liked the board.

I am gaining a faster stock chip that runs cooler, as well as a more feature rich board that will support broadwell if I ever decided to upgrade, probably won't though. Over my Z7 board I also gain AC WiFi, Sata Express, Extra front USB 3.0 header and the M.2 slot.

i would only have regrets if my new rig didn't feel fast enough for the money i've spent

my last rig was slow because it was bugged, but this new one is so damned fast that it's waiting for my password before i've even managed to sit down in front of the tv, so no it deffo doesn't need to be any faster ;)

i'd say what's missing is an OLED tv at about 65 inches.

but the weak link in the pc will deffo be the GPU when i fit it, because the onboard graphics i'm using now is way more stable than an AMD card........ there's no screen flicker, screen tearing, no ``cant detect your drivers bla bla bla`` :D

that's the same mobo i had, mine was just awfall, after testing i found that the PCI slot had been faulty for over two years....this gigabyte is way too complicated for me, but it runs so well, so fast

Not at all. Upgraded for the first time since 2009 (from a Phenom II X3 720) and have been delighted with it. I doubt that any game released during the next five years or so will require more power than the 4790k can provide, given the laptop CPUs in the new consoles. Will probably upgrade again in a few years once DDR4 has matured a bit.

I upgraded from my socket 2011 today seen as my motherboard died. So i just purchased the 4790k and the Asus Maximus VII Formula.

Let me tell you,It's a noticable leap in preformance over my old CPU.

I'll be honest,I would have waited if i wasn't going i52 next week,But i am.

So i needed a upgrade asap,Don't regret mine so far.

Honestly, the two are completely different things. X99 is a more expensive, more enthusiast-grade platform in comparison to Z97, not really comparable to Z97. Sure, you could have regrets from getting an X79 setup right now but I don't think you could have regrets from Z97 but you could from X79 :P

No regrets here, sure X99 would've been nice but I don't think I'd take full advantage of it and I wouldn't have been able to fit that + a nice GPU into my £1k budget. Also it was torture seeing all those games in my steam library going unplayed because I was sat on an Athlon :p

Depends. I just went X79 (not built it yet as waiting on a cooler). Admittedly it is an upgrade from a Q9450. However the motherboard was from the members market and the 3930K was a refurb at what seemed to be a very good price. So overall it was pretty cheap (around £300 for both) and it allows me to get 6 reasonably fast cores.

I was undecided on whether to get an AMD 8320 for the cores or an I5 or I7 for the single thread performance. An X99 is out of the question because of price so a used X79 setup seemed a very good compromise for lots of cores and space for lots of cheap DDR3 memory for future expansion. I think the 4790K would be better for gaming but for light gaming and mostly productivity work then I would be happy with either and the X79 came up first at a price I was willing to pay. It also has better multiple GPU bandwidth and capacity for more future RAM (neither of which I really needed but may come in handy in the future).

My last desktop was an Athlon 3800+ and my last CPU was a P8400 so no, but I had to convince myself that an i7 wasn't pointless.

Loving it so far, can't wait to start using it properly.

Nothing wrong with x79 for gaming, x79 here with a 4820K:4.6GHz see sig with the option of a 4930K.

I play BF4 no problems at all Ultra settings and would not say that was light gaming.;)

Yes 4790K:4.4GHz stock is faster, but once you start overclocking you have heat issue's unless you get a good chip.

No regrets tbh, I may still move over to X99 once its been out a while. Dc chips will only run hot when stressed, fine in other tasks.

My 4770k is a terrible clocker so I debated selling it and going for DC. But now I'm not sure. I definitely won't use x99 to its full potential but I reckon that it would last me longer

Pretty much the same as choosing a 2600k over a 3930k, the 3930k user won't see any benefits unless you have 3/4 gpu's (or a game specifically designed to use all the cores)

Ppz who jumped on the z97 platform do you regret not waiting for x99?

Thoughts?

I guess ultimately folk won't know if they regret it until we see the pricing and benchmarks for the X99 hardware.

Based on past experience I've been disappointed by every 'enthusiast' range Intel has released in the last 5 years and the gains have been modest so from a value point of view it's likely X99 won't actually make any sense financially for most users.

Between DDR4 memory, top end mobo's plus the bottom range 5820K likely costing over £300 you could easily spend a good £200+ over what the equivalent would cost on the Z79 range for what will likely be a barely noticeable boost in performance.

If you have the cash to spare then I suspect X99 is likely to be the fastest setup on the market for a while though.

I really don't think the DDR4 is going to be mature enough to move over to initially, next years chips/rams/motherboards will be matured then. 4790K is the best I feel.

The way i see it's going to last 5 years, I wont have to change board again, a lot of people on the mainstream stuff often do ( z68 -> z97) and i read somewhere broadwell or skylake will be ddr4 and ddr3.

in the long run x99 is cheaper i think.
