4790k died

Well got my new one this morning, all up and running now.
running a mild over clock of 4.5. Hits 80 with occt. not tried in game yet. Ironic when people complain about 290x's dot ya think ;)

@Lord Zed.

Tbh if it want for the board being CPU dependant I would have gone back to AMD as strange as that sounds. The speed increase going from my old x6 want really worth the cost and certainly not now.

Delidding is always risky, too much pressure on the die can kill it instantly, or over time, if not done perfectly.

What i don't get is why it lasted this long, I would understand it if it had moving parts like modding a engine block could develop issues. Ok not the best analogy but you get my meaning.

Can you elaborate on this, please. Are you referring to a cooler plate being directly against the die solely or can this happen with the stock heatsink as well after the removal of the epoxy?

The die is made from silicon. IE - glass. One wrong move and you crack it and kill it.

Back in ye olde days the AMD Athlon XP were delidded as stock to keep costs down so AMD fitted four little sponge pads on each corner. It was common for people to knock one off, then crack the die when fitting the cooler.

You see die guards for Ivybridge and haswell, but I think they're only designed to work with waterblocks. Msi include one with their latest high end x power Z97 board.

Delidding invalidates warranty unfortunately.

Edit: Rats, pete just said that! Too slow :/

If you put a small dab of silicon at each corner to keep the IHS on do you think Intel will pull the IHS off to see if you've delidded it? They'll just chuck the cpu in a machine to test it. If it doesn't work you'll get a replacement.

They haven't got time to spend ages looking at a cpu to see if you've mistreated it. If the outside is unmarked (which is should be if you've hammer'and'viced it to delid) then you'll be good to go.

I de-lidded it a while ago so thats a no go :(

Silicon the IHS down - be neat - and send it back under RMA. If they turn it down, what have you got to lose except a few quid in postage?

Saw a vid on youtube were a fella delidded, removed the intel glue and after repasting, he restuck the ihs with a slightly thinner layer of black adhesive. It looked like the stuff i see on building sites.
